Could you tell me the name of the Clematis on the right please? I think the one on the left is a Mr Ruppell. This pic is from last year. They seem to be taking ages to flower this year.

The proliferated centre is always there. Its been there 2 years in a row and I think the first one that has started opening this year is the same ... that bit in the centre has lots of tiny petals (similar to the ones already visible and they keep opening for a long time.
The one on the left, I saw one like it on Hywel's blog and I assumed they were the same - maybe I was wrong.

Maybe its darker than usual because its only just opened and no sun has reached it? I used to grow this one and I recall it being paler coloured, but it was in full sun.
I've got Piilu and it doesn't have that big clump in the centre...so maybe this isn't Piilu at all... Post another pic when its fully open...

It looks rather like Nelly Moser, in colour.
I agree with bamboo, that doesn't look like Dr. Ruppel.

Could the clematis on the right be C. Josephine

The one on the right could be Clematis 'Josephine' (I've had my Clematis book out.)

It certainly looks identical to my 'Josephine' there is a picture on my garden page.

Yes Scottish, I've had a look at your pic and it is the same I think - when the central part opens more it looks exactly the far left flower in your picture.
Well pleased with the name too as it happens to be my mother's name! She will be well pleased about that :)
The "Dr Ruppell" one hasn't opened yet ... will post another pic when it does and maybe take a picture in sunny weather :) and hopefully you can hopefully identify that one too :)
Thanks all for your help.

Yes it is, but that is from last year. It hasn't opened this year yet - any day now... and then I can take some photographs..

The one on the left looks like Clematis 'Mrs N Thompson'.
The one on the right, Flcrazy posted one like this and hers is thought to be Clematis 'Josephine'

Drc, I think you may be right. Just googled Mrs Thompson and looked at some other pics I had from last year and they are pretty similar. Thanks!

I think its Piilu, with a proliferated (abnormal) centre. Nothing to worry about, the proliferation, probably this year's flowers will be normal.
Not sure that's Dr. Ruppel on the left either, colour's a bit too reddish lilacy and dark. Reminds me of another one - if only I could remember the name....
