Bamboo shoots?

The bamboo that I inherited (and think is a phyllostachys) was looking a little worst for wear, being in a rather root-bound pot. I was advised at the GC to feed it liberally and when I did so, got these sprouts from the base. They don't however, look anything like bamboo. Are they bamboo shoots or are they some other plant that I have somehow got for free? If they aren't new shoots, what should I do to thicken the bamboo up?

Thanks Seaburn, I think that's the only sensible thing to do.

they dont look like bamboo, they usually come up like spikes. you never know the freebies might be something nice, probably a weed though.
for the bamboo I would be tempted to knock it out of its pot and see what the roots look like. If they have nice white growth that is good. if they are all congested and very brown then i would repot it.
