I have been advised to grow my veg using the sq foot method. Am I right in thinking that what ever I grow in each sq the roots will intermingle and that crop rotation goes out of the window? Doesn't this pose a treat? Clubroot for example

Hi Great, you were specifically asking about brassicas in the question where you were advised to use the square foot method. At a foot apart the whole idea is the roots don't intermingle on the brassicas, other vegetables are grown in different ways... depends what the vegetable is. Peas Bulba and I sow in double rows about two foot between each double row and with the seeds about 6 inches apart. Roots crops are different again.

With a plot 2 metres x 1metre rotation is not worth considering, the best bet is to change the soil every two or three years!

This is what is done in small greenhouses!

You do not need to work strictly to one plant per sq ft , the size of the plant/ s will determine this!

For instance; if you were sowing radishes or spring onions in one of the square you could lots of plants.

You could get nine lettuce in four squares.

What you want to keep in mind is the eventual size of what you want to grow and more often or not this will determine how much stuff you can plant.

A little planning before planting is what is needed.

I agree Teeg. with the small size Great's raised bed is rotation isn't possible - wasn't thinking when I last replied.

Great for salad leaves we use an old, tatty looking, once white, plastic trough Bulba sows directly into the trough. To start with we pull out some of the small plants once there are enough leaves to use. Then as the other plants get bigger we pick the outer leaves off to encourage them to keep growing more. You could do this in any container.
