My Compost Bin.
I sometimes lift the lid of my compost bin and find the worms congregating on the lid and sometimes a lot of them are dead and gone all mushy YUK! Is the compost getting too hot do you think?

Is it too wet and does it smell nasty? Sometimes, if the balance isn't right, worms on the inside of the lid mean the contents of the heap are too toxic for the worms to stay in it, so they try to escape. Might need to add some activator to sweeten it...

This happens in my 'Dalek' type bin too. I add some shredded paper and give it all a good stir, lifting stuff from the bottom and mixing it up and this solves the problem. I think it gets very compacted and needs to be aerated.

No it not too wet and not smelly, think I will go and get some activator as you advised Bamboo, also as Jaykaty said add shredded paper, I have some of that and will add some tomorrow, could I add some potting compost as if I tip the compost bin I don't think I will be able to reposition it. Thanks for your help Guys. xx Jackie xx

I apologise if this sounds to terrible and shocking to contemplate, but you could just add urine to the heap - its chock full of nitrogen, specially the morning one, and that's mostly what's in activator for compost heaps...

Well, rumour has it that mens is best - personally, I've always found it worked whoever produced it. Seems to be some suggestion that the 'hormones' in women's might not be useful - I think that's c....lers meself, at my age, I haven't got any hormones left anyway...
Just noticed your ladder comment, lol! I do know someone who said he was going to resite the compost heap directly below his bathroom window...

I've added some paper shredding and some compost and now the worms are no longer in the lid.

I saw a Monty Don programme about compost bins, his advice was to add plenty of leaves and turn often!
Hope this helps Jackie
