My 4 year old small leaf roderdendrum was pulled up

The roots were mostly separated from the plant. It was planted two days later, and now a year since the accident, and it remains dull yellow green, but not dried out. I am considering cutting two thirds, to one foot off the ground, to give the roots(?) strength. Any suggestions?

What a shame! Sorry to hear about the poor Rhodo - I think you'll have to choose a new one, and there are plenty about at the moment.

Hallo to you all from Germany..this question is about Rhododendrons.
i was told you can get very small rhodendrons suitable for rockeries
Sorry Sylviaplant but I suspect your rhododendron is dead. Try scraping a bit of bark off well down the trunk, if there is green you have life.... otherwise r.i.p. Pulling any shrub up is likely to kill it, you lose all the little fiberous roots that feed the poor thing. You could try cutting back until you see live wood but, don't be surprised if you don't find any.
