Does anyone know what the tall pink/ purple flowers were in Monty Don's garden when he was talking about his roses in this weeks programme? Thanks

I do remember noticing he had some tall foxgloves, was it those?

I've just had a look on the BBC i player and they look a bit like phlox but I can't get a good enough view of the leaves.

Oh wow Bamboo your right - it does look like those. I've not heard of them. Are they part of the phlox family? Can I just say how much you've helped me out on most questions I have asked on GOY. One happy gardener:-))
Thanks

Thanks, but I should say I'd never heard of or seen Hesperis until I joined this site 3 years ago - learned about it on here, lol, so what goes around comes around.
Shortlived, seeds itself, likes poor soil, not related to Phlox - but when you said it looked like Phlox, I guessed it must be that, because it does look a bit like Phlox...

I've never heard of them either but they are rather nice. Is that where the "wreck of the Hesperis" comes from? He he.

Oh (groan) I shall have to look that up now, Cammomile - you've aroused my curiosity...

Oh dear, even more ignorant than I thought I was regarding poetry - its apparently the title of a poem 'Wreck of the Hesperus' written by Wordsworth, Cammomile. Ibet you knew that all along, didn't you...So no, nowt to do with Hesperis...

The common name for Hesperis is Sweet Rocket, very easy to grow from seed, and scented - hence the name, but like Bamboo says its short lived. I treat is like a biennial.

These are lovely, I too must try some next year, thanks for asking the question.

I grow the white-flowered form and it self sows quite happily (too happily?) after flowering

I grew the white one for the first time this year and although they are great whilst it was really dry I found that they didn't seem to like the soil too moist.
They smell nice but I can't give them the poor dry soil they obviously like.

I started with 3 plants donated by a GoYer 3 yrs ago and now i have to pull them like weeds. have white pale pink pale mauve and deep mauve ones now. they are stunning especially in the early/late light.

It is related to Cabbages of all things, a member of the Brassica family. Another one of the carriers of club root, like another relative, the Wallflower.

I've got sweet rocket too and it does take over if not checked but a pretty flower for all that.
