can i lop a christmas tree

i have a christmas tree in my garden which is approx 20ft high. i bought it from woollies back in the 80s and it has withstood a transfer from another garden. unfortunately it is getting too big and shading my lawn, and i'm sure it is taking a lot of goodness from the beds around. for sentimental reasons i do not want to get rid of it but i think i may have to unless i can make it smaller!

Firstly, congratulations on saving your tree -twice, well done!
Can you lop a xmas tree - yes.
How will it look - ugly - probably.
It really depends on what type of "xmas tree" it is, and how it will be pruned.
To do a good job you need a professional to do it and that can be costly. So unless you like a shady garden...

If you want the light, you must be hard and cut a large amount off your xmas tree. Choose a place in the tree about 6 to 8 feet from the top, cut cleanly and seal the cut. Keep the tree well watered. If the top re-establishes it will soon put on a new top with several branches. If it were mine I would wait until next Christmas and use the top as a Christmas tree indoors.
