What is this growth on my acer?

Could anyone help identify the problem with my acer (see photo), and suggest how I might treat it? Currently the problem seems to be centred on the base of the trunk, and the rest of the plant seems healthy; however, I am afraid that this will soon not be the case. I have had the acer for just over two years, and have only recently noticed the problem. Any advice will be much appreciated.

This looks like scale insect which is a type of aphid (greenfly). The best start to deal with this is to wash off what you can reach. Use ordinary soapy water (the soap helps to penetrate the scales). You may need to do it a couple of times to get all of them. They should not cause too much problem on an otherwise health tree. You could also spray, but it will afffesct other wildlife. I find that since I stopped spraying outside a few years ago, I get hardly any problems as the birds and other insects clear them all away.
