Westonbirt Acers

At last! after 8 years of living 5 miles away from this beautiful arboretum I have finally become a member. Having baulked at the £9 entry fee it only cost me an extra £21 to be a member for the next 12 months!
There are two sides of Westonbirt, one called Silkwood where I usually go because it’s the part where dogs are allowed. The other side, where I went today was choc full of Acers in full autumn colour.
These first 3 pics were at the entrance to the ‘loop walk’! Snapping away already!
So many views of dark to light which I especially like
This is the famous ‘wollemi pine’ found a few years back hiding in a ravine in Australia, a remnant of the dinosaur era.
Lots of dappled sunlight, it was a perfect sunny day.
And so many shapes, leaves and beautiful tree trunks.
Here are more Acer pics!!!
And more
Am runniing out of words really!
All this on just one side of Westonbirt! I remember that there are some lovely Acers of the other side, so in the next few days I will take a walk with Prudence, our best behaved doggie….Sluggy hasn’t been yet and last time Jazz went, I lost her and had to spend ages calling ‘JazzyPup, Jazzypup’..it was well embarrassing! The naughty pup was playing and not too far away from earshot to hear me! As for taking all 3 dogs, no way!
Hope you enjoyed the photos of these very beautiful trees.

Oh yes, those Liquidambers..tried to get a good photo of them but need a wider lens. The bark I especially like.
I think this year my faves have been the yellows with the dark twisted trunks, they look very feminine. Thanks for looking folks.
And Bampy I went especially for you really!!

Hardly a surprise you ran out of words Lulu...there are so many adjectives you could use to describe those trees and your pictures for that matter :)
You captured some beautiful pictures, very atmospheric and eye catching.
Thanks for showing us.

too kind & I'm flattered Lulu ! Every bit of any acer just draws me in, this place is a dream.
My house is called Amber House, planted a liquidamber 20 years ago & the bark is quite remarkable. From a 4' sapling it was 20' untill a gale took the top 6' off. Glorious deep claret autumn colours at the moment.

What a wonderful place. There are some lovely trees growing there. Would be a wonderland for dogs (& puppies) to romp about in. I do sympathise with the whole "Jazzypup" thing. I have a 10 week old golden retriever puppy who is usually good at recall, but at times I can call repeatedly & he is within earshot & totally ignores me. Eventually he does come, either when he has lost interest in what he is doing, or he is fed up with hearing my voice lol. As he has not yet completed his vaccination course, I cannot take him off our property, but when I am able to in about two weeks time, I won't be taking him off leash for quite some time, that's for sure.

Lulu you take a great photograph, the colours on the trees are amazing, I would love to visit there, as its so far away I will have to be satisfied with sharing your pics, added to my favs, thankyou.....

Glorious to see so many at once! I have only one - in fact the Acer in your first pic looks the twin of mine - but if we had more land that wasn't destined to grow veggies I'd definitely set it to lawn with several more acers of varying heights. Lovely pics - wish I could join you on your next walk (although I will - virtually!). :o)

We stayed near there,a couple of years ago,but sadly,we weren't able to visit Westonbirt...thanks for the lovely pics,Lulu :o)

Yes Jazzy is to be re named 'Fenton'!!
Sad to report that membership doesn't include 'friend in for free' unless you have soft velvety ears and a waggy tail!
Glad you enjoyed the Acer bonanza folks :)

20 Oct, 2012
Well I was thinking, taking a few cuttings might help with the entrance fee ; )

A very nice landscaping. It must be quite old arboretum. I think it was a good idea to go and make photos there just this time of the year. Thank you for the blog.

WOW! Your photos of those yellow trees with the twisted branches & trunks with the sunlight behind them are really fabulous! :-))
20 Oct, 2012
Delightful photos, visited a few years back, but not at this time of the year, so have never seen the trees in all their glory, so thanks for this lovely blog.
21 Oct, 2012
just been to an arboretum today ~ not anywhere near as good as this!
21 Oct, 2012
Which one Sticki?
21 Oct, 2012
Arley in Worcestershire, I really like it DD but it is smaller than westonbirt and doesn't have anywhere near as many acers.

LOVELY :-))))

I love the 'curly' tree about the 11th one down. What is it - do you know?
30 Nov, 2012
That's an Acer also Shirlwhirl. Now is just a bare curly trunk.
Went for a walk there today and a quick cuppa. Tied the dogs whilst I looked in the shop and after 5 minutes, lots of howling and singing from my tied to the fence pooches!
