A few weeks ago a number of GOYERs were surprised to find that the Acer has flowers followed by seed. This is proof if any is needed that from little seeds Acer’s grow.
These have germinated in a container growing a Rhododendron and are directly below the Acer tree the seed would have fallen from last Autumn.Have added a picture of part of the tree for comparison

Cinders some i have potted have been lost in the first winter, don't think they like there roots frosted.I have in the past found 2nd or 3rd year ones in the garden and they seem to have no problem.

In my previous garden I had Acer ginala ...it has very small greenish yellow flowers in early spring which have the most heavenly aroma...they smell like lilacs and the bees swarm to the flowers. Between the Amur Maples and the Russian Olive (Eleagnus augustifolia) the scent in the garden was heavenly.

Never heard of a scented one.I take it was the flowers that were scented. Was it a tree or shrub size.

A. ginala or Amur Maple can be either. When I bought the one I had, I planted it in a spot where it was sheltered but had room to develop...they can be a small tree...15/20 ft tall with a spread of approx. the same dimension. Yes the scent is from the flowers which appear in late May/ early June (here), which is roughly the same period as lilac blossoms. The scent is nearly identical. It can be pruned to shrubbery or left to grow into a tree.

Wow Bjs, do they come true from seed? I've never seen any seedlings from mine, but I live in hope now. Are the flowers on yours noticable? Is this acer the only one of yours which has produced seedlings? Is it possible some of the japanese maples are sterile? Lots of questions...I've made you an acer expert lol:-)

BA
the seedlings do show up in various parts of the garden and do seem to be a mix of several different ones both colour and size.
I can think of at least four different ones I have never seen seed on so that leaves about 6 that do set seed.
Flowers are quite visible when the leaves first start to develop and the undeveloped seed can be seen soon after, they are not ripe for a further several months.
You do need to be close up to your plant to see them as they are not that large.
there were pictures of the flowers posted about 3/4 weeks ago but dont remember who,may be some one else can remember.
hope that helps.

Wow, thats fantastic. Lovely colour too. I haven't had any luck at all with Acers, seem to lose them every winter. Maybe I should invest in a large one in the beginning that could stand the winter.
