How to deadhead my Papaver rubifragum / Spanish poppy
By Poppylover

Hi There have just started growing this beautiful flower . Unfortunately when the gorgeous orange petals bloom out and the wind blowa they all depart , leaving a bald stamen . The instructions say remove dead flowers to encourage re - flowering , certain members of my househould tell me this means break off the whole stalk , can anyone confirm if this is so or if it means just deadhead the top as i', sure it must be ? Many Thanks xx

Deadhead as close to the base of the plant as you can get. Cut, don't break!
This way you won't have a dying stalk waving about and spoiling the appearance of the plant. Of course, you could always leave the one head on to mature, to collect the seed, and remove subsequent ones. That's what I usually do.
