this is going to sound REALLY stupid... how do you know which flowers will come back the following year and which ones you have to buy again and replant?

Hi Mookins :) Its all in the Name & not a silly question @ all , Plants that come back are called Perennials , Plants that are`nt hardy & need to be replaced each year are called Annauls :) Then uv got Evergreens which stay Green all Year :) Hope this helps ? Jac x

Don't forget the Biennials! These are the ones that you sow or plant one year, but they don't do much until the following year, then they flower - and die. But meantime they have produced seed which is self-sown or you can collect and start the process over again. Great Mullein, Sweet Williams and Foxgloves are Biennials.

looking at your plant list you have a lot of perenials, some annuals and a fe biennials. some of the annuals will self seed like the forgetmenots so they perennial as they are always there. youe alcea hollyhocks are biennial usually so if they flower this year collect the seed and off you go again.
when i have a little more time i will try and highlight them for you.

Just want to clarify something - some annuals are hardy, they just have a short lifecycle. They will be marked hardy annual or HA on the packet. These can be sewn late summer-autumn and then they'll flower a bit earlier next summer. I've got love-in a mist, candytuft and calendula which I sowed in autumn but there are others you can do this with.

dont be mookins. some very short lived perennials are not, as Elleme corretly, says fully hardy in britain. they will survive a mild winter. many seeds for sale as annuals are in fact tender perennials but for ease of growing in our climate they are called half hardy annuals. snapdraggons fall into this catergory.
