THE DRINKING HOLE

I pinched the basic design idea from a garden at Chelsea a few years ago, called a Celtic Sanctuary. We got a mini digger and dug a hole about 6 feet deep. Then we used the stones we had dug out to make the seating and put gravel on the floor. There are old logs pointing skywards and the sides are kept in with willow weaving, and ivy to stabilise the sides.
At first it was smoky with the open fire, so we later got a chimera which lifts the smoke out.
The next addition was the solar powered blue fairy lights. They work a treat even in mid winter. They are done in swags from the logs.
I’ve planted 2 stipa golden oats to guard the entrance. Aroung the outside rim is miscanthus zebra grass, which needs to bulk up a bit. In my dreams, the drinking hole is walled at the top by 6 feet high zebra grass. Inside the zebra grass is a rim of angel’s fishing rods. In the dream, they are forced to arch over the hole by the tall zebra grass.
Its getting dark now, so we’re off with a dram down the hole to watch the shooting stars…

Its a bit prime evil (never could spell that one). As soon as you go down, the wind stops and the noise from the wind stops too. Its always cosy, and it heats up really fast. Its like going into a nest or a burrow, I suppose.
We both saw 2 screaming shooting stars last night - like screamer rockets without the sound effects. Then I saw another that Martin said was a plane, so I said his next one was a spark from the fire....but we saw about 6 each before the clouds came and we called it a night.
