Winding down the garden

Someone once told me that when you hear the locusts start to sing you have 6 weeks of hot weather. Having heard them singing on June 24th, I suspect we have had our six weeks and summer is winding down. I will be officially draining the spa today or tomorrow for the winter. The plants will enjoy some extra water before the promised rain.

Time to find some cookie recipes to post!

That seems awfully early - our summer keeps going till at least the end of August here, and often into September too - I didn't realise yours ended earlier than ours.

Summer isn't over, it's just the heat portion has passed. We will still have hot days and the nights wil be cooler. Officially the summer is over on Labor Day, the first Monday in September. Autumn starts the 22nd.

It's now time to put in the cool weather fall crops. Those can stay in the garden until frost, which can be one or two light ones in mid- October, with a killing frost about the a bit later.

I start harvesting the last of the tomatoes the middle of September.

You are going to be a wee bit busy then........

Oh Linc...

I seem to stay busy. Housework, dog walking, yardwork, shopping. cooking. I just add baking to my morning routine, about the time the garden and yard work start to wind down.

With the hubs home, occasionally right now as he's three hours away helping his cousin with her ailing hubby- I have lots of quiet time in the morning. The dog wakes me at 4 for a hike. I mix 2-3 cookie batters, fridge them and then have coffee, paper and the PC. Then bake, cool and store. I have it down to what to make first so as to utilize egg whites or yolks from the previous batch. Too OCD, I guess.

The hardest one I make is an Italian Skaliti. Made almost like fresh pasta dough, run thru the pasta machine, cut into strips, tied into knots, and then fried.
I believe last year's effort was about 25 -30 dozen, just of those. I call that one the all day cookie.

Honest!

Oh Crissue,

you have to eat only one or two with the morning tea/coffee to make them last. you can't make up a plate like the hubs does on Christmas day with a pot of coffee and call that breakfast! But then he does have Bogie to walk/run for two hours. Maybe that burns off all the cookies, I don't think so! *-))
