Good for you, I don't grow much veg at all just a few in tubs, sadly last years didn't do very well at all but neither did the garden for a while, no surprise in that heat and lack of rain then I had a very good long lasting autumn display, I hope they do well for you, as you said if they don't then sow again, its supposed to warm up for us next week, pleased to say its already beginning, for the first time in over a week the frost has begun to clear in the shady areas....Welcome back Somhairlie and Best Wishes for '23 and the coming year....

Sounds like you’ve been keeping busy over the colder months, Somhairlie! I, myself, haven’t grown vegetables. I’m not sure where to start and I don’t have much room in the back garden anymore. It must give a sense of achievement I think. I do hope your seeds thrive and you have a lot of produce this coming year.

Thanks, everyone. I am looking forward to this year. It is many years since I used to grow veg. Once upon a time, I spent most of my free time on the allotment. But since moving into this house some years back, the garden has not been large enough for a veg patch.

So last year, I grew some potatoes in the only spare patch of the garden. It was a bit shady, but the tatties still did well and it gave me a notion to do more veggie growing. So, I went about clearing an area of some shrubs and cleaned the ground. Dug in some manure last autumn and now ready to go.

Got some more seeds this afternoon. So, planning on growing tatties, carrots, beetroot, spinach and broccoli. I have some lettuce too that may either go into the patch or in a tub. It is the mixed variety which you pull leaves from throughout the season.

Never having grown spinach before, I was surprised to learn that they do not like to be transplanted, so they will need to go stright into the ground.

Next up....... to source some seed potatoes and get the first earlies into trays to chit up. Think that will be early next month.

I have four raised beds and my leeks although smaller than usual were very good.
I have grown lots of salad successfully, especially beetroot.
I also had three potato sacks which I had sent for and got a good small crop.

Just wanted to add Somhairle, that I grew spinach, but despite being in the shade still wilted and have always found it difficult to grow.

The last of the leeks were given to my neighbour who tells me they were still delicious. She used some and froze the rest.

As for the spinach........ time will tell! If the ground survives this impending frost and snow.
