Where have they been?

All this lovely warm summer I have seen no slugs or snails. After a couple of days of rain there are big fat healthy looking slugs eating my nice ripe outdoor tomatoes. What I’m wondering is where have they been??? The soil has been dry a long way down and there’s been nowhere lush for them to hide in (You didn’t really want a photo did you…)

I know exactly where the've been hiding they've been hiding in my garden we collect them by the bucket full they must have spent the last few months breeding during the months the place was empty the garden was overgrown before we moved in ,every plant was full of them we even find them up the walls and fences . :o(

I’ve been on a daily snail hunt at dusk and have had buckets full! Partly because some of my garden is in the shade and thats where they’ve been hiding out! My fences are covered in his beautiful mature ivy, giving my garden a very natural feel. I have learnt that that means no juicy plants can be planted in my borders as the slugs/ snails hide out in the ivy during the day and slither out at night! They are very good at finding hiding places and staying put till we have some rain.

Ah, so mine have been travelling from your gardens, Amsterdam and Amy! thanks a lot! The tomatoes affected ae miniature ones and are sitting on top of a concrete BBQ, quite a way from any lush hidey holes. Its amazing how knew they were there and climbed up the horrible dry concrete walls to reach the feast. And they are good at telling quite ripe from nearly ripe too...
Good luck with the battle Daylilly and Karen!

Some fat ones in my garden today, one was climbing up a wall.
I bought a Campanula recently and they are devouring it. I've put crushed egg shells around it now and it's started to grow back.

Just wanted say that I have put up some photo's on 'my photo's' to show people what I am talking about when it comes to natural looking boundaries. We bought our house 12 years ago in the middle of the village, surrounded by 4 neighbours. However, it really does not feel that way and when friends visit they can not get over how private, quiet and green the garden feels. (When we were looking for a house we considered buying a house on the edge of village overlooking the fields which have now all been built on!) Anyway I digress, we went for this house as the garden was enclosed and very private with mature trees, shade and lots of character. The fences are all natural looking, either covered in ivy or camouflaged by a wildlife hedge and there are no fence panels to be seen. It does require quite a lot of maintenance to keep it looking 'natural' and not overgrown but I think it's worth it. Anyhow, take a look and let me know what you think.

they do find cracks and crevices in the soil, in walls and even under the facia's of the roof and they are able to squeeze into very small gaps.
But I have 2 hedgehogs that forage in the garden every night and I have much less slug damage than in previous years :o)))

What a lucky thing! I hope they stay with you.

It is amazing how they find places to live when it's too dry to slime.......
