A walk on the dark side

Back this morning from a night hike. We try to encourage our eyes to adjust to the lack of light so the torches were off. Round the back of the houses there were fantastic waves of lilac scent coming off: much stronger than during the day. Lovely!

There was quite a commotion when the bats started flying but stupidly I had my head in a map because I knew that I had to memorise everything quick before the torches went back off so I missed them. Apart from that the main wildlife was probably pigeons - we kept disturbing some very large birds which then crashed through the trees - a bit undainty for anything else so I assume thats what they were. I thoroughly recommend walking at night or at twilight - its a great way to see trees - particularly during the winter.

I love the smell of lilac. I didn't realise it was stronger in the night.

Rather you than me Sarah, did you see much wildlife on your hike ? Oddest fact of my day so far is that milkmen daren't leave loaves of bread out on the doorsteps due to Foxes ripping bags and eating contents !
