Hi everyone, hope you find this interesting, after years of suffering slug damage to plants, I have finally found some plants that survive very well, I will not use slug pellets as I have hedgehogs, squirrels, and lots of other wild life in the garden. Heres a list that I hope you may find useful

I agree, I have tried delphiniums and lupins and lost both, if anyone knows of anymore slug free plants I would be grateful if they could let me know. The scabiosa are ok if you protect them went the new shoots come through I use a cloche ( hope I have spelled that right) Epimedium, loosestrife, are a couple more

Thank you Taz, I have copied the list into my notebook to take when I go to the GC.

one thought that's just occurred to me, why do slugs not seem to eat weeds? They never eat the bluebells that threaten to take over the garden either, they only eat the plants I want to keep!:(

I know it,s so annoying, it like when weeds grow right in the middle of your best plants and you can,t dig them out, with out damaging the plant, but there are no weeds growing around the plant. (thinking of celandine
the pain of my life)

Thankyou Taz, I have never had a problem with my Delphiniums getting eaten by slugs or snails, I rarely see a slug here but I think they avoid my garden because its full of frogs but I have thousands of snails to do battle with, the frogs haven't worked out how to remove them from their shells yet....

They don't touch the Tellima grandiflora or Polemonium (Jacobs Ladder) in my garden.
Taz, can I add one observation please? Whilst they don't eat many of the larger leafed plants you mention up above, these plants are the best place to look for them when you are slug hunting! I often find masses of slugs under the Brunnera, Alchemilla and others that thrive in shadier spots.

thanks Scottish, I know what you mean, I find them hiding everywhere, they have eaten Jacobs ladder in my garden, but I think everyone seems to have problems with some plant that others don,t. they nibbled my heucheras for the first time ever, serves for me right for bragging that they don,t touch them, that,ll teach me

Check your Heuchera for Caterpillars, if you're certain that it isn't vine weevil, that is. I've found the odd caterpillar or two on them!

Thanks Taz. a useful list, I've got a few of those and agree the slugs don't bother them, apart from the heucheras which get a bit chewed but not too badly. It's a great idea to try to avoid the plants the slugs go for. I don't bother with lupins or delphiniums for instance, because the slugs will demolish them in no time.
