life in the garden

Hi everyone, well the garden is coming to life both with plants and wildlife, the plant are really coming on and the bird feeders have been a buzz with life. among the usual blue tits , coal tits, we have seen redpolls, siskins, and a bullfinch, plus the collared doves and the wood pigeons cleaning up around the feeder, at dusk the blackbirds start their chorus, and even when its dark the garden is full of life, went out last night with the touch to check the pond ( sounds mad but its the best time to see what is in the pond) I spotted six newts among the frogs ,watched the hedgehog do his round, and stopped a little field mouse run from the border grab some of the fallen seeds from the feeder then dart back ,and I could hear the owls calling in the distance, all with in ten minutes, makes you wonder just how much is out there during the night,

sounds wonderful, we don't get much variety of bird round here, and other peoples cats keep most of them out of the garden. We do get lots of bats though, so I go out at dusk sometimes to watch them. I suspect there are mice nesting under the shed too, but I tend to only see the dead ones the cats leave on the lawn:(

we live between two woods ,one each side of the valley, I think that why we get lots of birds, it as taken a couple of years of feeding before we were seeing as many as we are now, when we were on holiday in a cottage once in Scotland, the last visitor there had written in the visitor book that one night they had counted over two hundred bats coming out of the gable of the cottage, so we stood one night at dusk to see them come out, lost count at about 180, what amazing sight,

I also like to take a walk down the garden at night, there are always owls about :o). It's so different, and I like the early morning too. I've heard a cuckoo several times this year.

Oh I am envious of your birds! never seen a redpoll and bulfinches are very thin on the ground (or in the air) - have seen one in the last goodness knows how long. And newts and a hedgehog, sounds like heaven!
