WORTH THE WAIT

A supermarket packet of Aquilegia seeds 58p. will germinate easily now its getting warmer.
Planting on later into a bed will make a lovely centrepiece cheaply.
They are very hardy. Mine were ok in the freezeups.
Will spread. Very good value for money.

Thanks Diane. I have loads of Aquilegia self sets in the garden at the moment and mine were all from a packet of seeds too. I find this is a good way of filling bare patches. I've also found that GC's sell very small shrubs a lot cheaper too and I don't mind waiting for them to grow.

I think you get a great sense of achievement by bringing small plants or seed on yourself. You can also save a lot of money. Many years ago, I bought two acers at 98p each from Wilkinsons. They've both grown into fine specimens now. I go into my garden most days when I get in from work, just to see what's happening. Sad, isn't it?? lol

I have been here for 40 years and some of my plants and shrubs have been here nearly as long, I just split them up every few years and if there`s a gap I fill it, I still check them all the time and yes I get a great feeling even after all that time when I see the new growth....

Hi Sheilar, Lil and LincsLass - I agree with everything you say - just to see a new leaf coming up from the soil makes me happy, especially like today when I find something that I thought had been killed during the winter. Today I found a white snakeroot that I bought last Autumn which I thought the frost had got at. Simple things please simple minds, eh ?

I do the same - buy small plants and watch them grow. As you said, it's more exciting, and cheaper. I've only lived here 6 yrs but can see the difference in many shrubs allready.

I agree, Hywel, last winter I did wish that some of my shrubs that are still quite small were a bit bigger simply because when the herbaceous plants have died down everything looks rather flat in places. But the time goes by so quickly anyway that a year has gone before I know it, so I just hope that I last out for the next 8 or 9 years so that I see everything nicely mature. Sorry to sound morbid but I am almost 62 and these days we just never know what will happen do we ? This is the third year of my garden and everything has already grown a lot which is a joy.

You are right. We never know what might happen. We could both live to be 100 :O
