Before (1989). Notice the very large Yew tree on the left. We pollarded it and now it is a narrow column in the jungle!

My favorite bit is the jungle - inspires me to do something similar maybe at my next house :-)

It was in October, just three and a half years go, since we bought the first palm. The next spring we put in some tree ferns, bamboos, some smaller palms and a group of bananas. The Pauwlonia has huge leaves and gets many comments. It's amazing how chunky its trunk is getting - we prune the tree back drastically each winter. We've put some red flowering Camellias in there and some Magnolia Grandiflora - so that there is a contrast in shape and form. Lilies seem to thrive and we've chosen hot colours. We've concentrated on lush and green. The acers are happy even with the dense shade and so is the Yew. There was one blue conifer left from the previous planting but, sadly, it had to go - it stuck out like a sore thumb. You sometimes have to be very single minded if you know what you're aiming for!

The jungle has been real fun to create - and its only three and a half years old. It really has an atmosphere!
