Gardening Helps Keep Me Sane!

It may be hard to tell from the pictures, but I decided to join the bed with the rock in it to the flower bed closest, also expand it a little towards the gate.
The small bed in the centre of the grass is now slightly bigger also.
Haven’t quite finished the joining of the beds yet but it’s an ongoing project and is marked by the rocks now.

I just had to go and dig something this weekend, seems my husband’s job may be at risk, they are late paying the employees and there is a lot going on where he works. Having lived through him being out of work for a year and a half not that long ago (and still trying to recover from that) I am feeling very stressed right now and find doing stuff in the garden helps to ease that a little. Don’t even know if we’ll have to move again, in which case working in the garden might not even be worthwhile, but it helps me cope.

It rained a lot last night so the normally rock hard soil was diggable this morning. How could I resist making a start when the sun came out for a while? The fact that I am wearing cream coloured cords and am leaving for work soon was no deterrant, so I now have the top layer of grass removed!

Thanks! We're still hoping for the best (especially before the rent is due!) but he's already checking out other jobs and has brought home his box of certificates etc.from work just in case.
I have to work every day this week preparing the store for Christmas, rather than my usual three days, so the extra money will be handy.

Gillian, my thoughts are with you. But like you, this is what I do at all times, it keeps me sane.

At the moment GoY is keeping me sane.
In the better weather, gardening too will keep me sane.:o)

Gillian ~
I so hope all works out okay for you. Such a worry.
A sure sign that the recession is all around us is that far fewer fireworks have been randomly let off so far on the days leading up to Nov. 5th.
So even the credit crunch has some advantages ~ neighbourhood pets have not been scared.

Fingers crossed Gillian that your husband stays in work.
Keep digging for victory ! :o)

It does help for sure to chat to all the folks on GoY and look at the wonderful pictures people post.
Our weather here seems to have gone crazy at the moment, from below zero last week to supposedly about 20c tomorrow, so I might get to do some more digging before the snow comes after all!

We will be thinking about you and your family, hope things will come out alright. We went thru a job loss about 2 years ago, and it takes a while to overcome.

Hi, Gillian. Just sending good wishes. The one good thing about hard times is, they don't last - just do a day at a time until things come right again.

Keep on with your garden, I enjoyed seeing your pictures.

Happy gardening, love Marge.

Sorry to hear this news placing you and your family under strain esp as we approach Christmas.

Sadly many families around the world facing this dilemma -we should not be bailing out banks but ensuring families everywhere have the right to a place they can call home.

It seems that gardening is enabling you to gain some relief from this worry - sincerely hope that all your efforts are rewarded and the new year will give you reason for more optimism.

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts, it helps a lot.

Good news! Mike finally got paid yesterday! Don't know if it is going to keep happening, I think a lot depends on the companies new project in Michigan, but we're good for the moment anyway.
Very ironic really that Mike is a financial planner! Seems he's good at that but we never seem to have enough to plan anything with ourselves!

~ I'm really pleased for you Gillian~
~ that's really good news!

~ is what the company does suffering because of the credit crunch? or just trying to expand in a bit of a rocky period?
If we were able to buy one of whatever-assuming not cars! would it help?

What happened was the company (DPR Financial) was run by two brothers. One is staying with DPR, the other (that Mike is with) is expanding his group called Wealth Management, that operates something called the Millionaire's Club, where for a certain annual fee people attend courses, seminars with famous motivational speakers etc. At the end of the course you end up with a diploma of completion, as well as more money! Mike is the 'Dean' of this and writes all the course material as well as organising and running seminars.
Their new place in the States is in Deerborn, Michigan, and so Mike will be travelling backwards and forwards to there on a regular basis, if all happens as planned .........
On the other hand, if it doesn't take off he could very well be out of work!

Gillian ~
Good to know Mike's salary was paid.
One step at a time, your future is already looking rosier.:o)

Hi Gillian, glad you got money coming in, hope Mike keeps in employment. Will continue to think about you.

4 Nov, 2008

What a difficult time for you - I am so sorry you've got all this hanging over you. Try to keep positive - and keep planning and working in the garden - as lots of other members (including me) find in times of stress, it really helps.

4 Nov, 2008

Mike left this morning for the States for three days so we'll see how things go. Thanks all for your encouragement!
I went out in the garden before work this morning to do a bit more digging, very relaxing!

4 Nov, 2008

Have you got any leaves to rake up, Gillian? Good exercise and very satisfying when you've cleared them away! (until the next lot descends!)

Let us know how Mike got on... :-)

5 Nov, 2008

Fingers crossed for you Gillian.
I said previously "Dig for Victory" and that really seems to be working for you !
And the added bonus is your garden will look great :o)

Things not looking so good still, might even have to move again. I'm going to look around my garden tomorrow and see if I can put any of my favourites into pots, just in case we have to do a winter move.
I'm really not feeling ready to move again, still unpacking from arriving here in April ! Thought we'd be here at least a couple of years so I could enjoy the garden I worked on for a short time - I might not even get to see all the bulbs I planted!
Sorry, that's my rant for the day, all done now.

28 Nov, 2008

i still have my fingers crossed for you Gillian that you dont have to move

28 Nov, 2008

Yes, I go along with the message from Irish.
I hope you can stay at your home for a longer time. xxx

28 Nov, 2008

Thanks Irish and TT, I'm hoping for the best.

28 Nov, 2008

~fingers crossed everything will work out for you Gillian~certainly hope so!

28 Nov, 2008

All the very best wishes Gillian

28 Nov, 2008

Oh Gillian. Lots of hugs from me to try to keep your spirits up. ( ) ( ) ( ).

Good idea to try to save the most precious of your plants. They won't mind being un-potted if everything works out well, which of course I hope it does!

29 Nov, 2008

If you do end up moving, will you have to go far?

29 Nov, 2008

I have no idea currently IF we'll have to move or WHERE it will be to! There's a very slight possibility of a payday on Monday so keeping our fingers crossed!
My problem now is whether to dig things up and put them in pots or not. Frosts have been around a while now and I'm not sure how diggable the ground is (be checking that out later if the temperature goes above freezing) also it's not giving things any time to re-establish before the really bad weather. Do I risk it or not?! Meant to be a major snowstorm moving in Sunday and Monday so I have to decide today really what to do.
