BRUSSELS IN BLOOM

A friend sent me these photos and they are so beautiful, I just wanted to share them with you;

The Carpet of Flowers in the Grand Place, Brussels. Close to a million
begonia flowers were used to create the 300 square metres carpet this
week. The patter is based on a medieval carpet design.
Craftsmen arrange the carpet by hand directly onto the square’s cobblestones,
without any soil. Grass and tree bark were also used to provide color.
The first carpet of flowers was created in 1971 as a way to promote begonias.
Each square metre of ground contains more than 300 flowers.

It's a wonderful concept - can you imagine if every city, town and village did this once a year - in scale to their size of course. Adding it to Britain in Bloom and the one-off field planted pictures that are done would help lift the gloom of the economic situation.

Thank you, I thought it was incredible too and Lujean, I like your idea. People spend a fortune on sand sculptures (which are incredible) but flowers would last so much longer and not get washed away with the tide.
