Pipistrelle Bats

Janey

Couldn’t believe my eyes this morning…there on the lawn, were not two pieces of rain-washed moss….but two tiny Pipistrelle Bats. One, the larger perfect, not a scratch to be seen, the other smaller, had been attacked…by what I’ve no idea. I had a read in my wildlife book and it said that the female has one offspring a year, in June, and I’ve an awful feeling Mum stayed with the baby and both died during the night.
Such a shame, we had seen a couple of them flying at dusk up and down the garden….but what would have managed to attack them?

Such a tiny creature about 1.5ins long

Thick russet fur

Small dog-like face and huge ears

Wonderful soft delicate skin….it felt like silk

Tiny little feet and claws

Close-up of the intricate wing structure

I read that they can live up to 16 years……wonder what happened???

What a shame, that two gorgeous little creatures are no longer on the earth, they are so sweet.

It is Pip....i've been reading about their predators, Owls are the main ones....but could be cats....so it could have been Teddy or Poppy......:o((

How terribly sad!

Very, very sad, Janey :-(

What a shame Janey! This way slowly and gradually the biodiversity is degrading day by day.

How sad Janey.
There is a bat group in Lincolnshire with a website (www.lincsbatgroup.co.uk)
They inform what to do if you find a grounded bat,too late for yours but you never know you may find a live one ! Also they like to know where there are colonies, although they may know of these ones I'm sure they would want to know if there are any diseases affecting them.

Thanks Aster....I'll have a look at them...:o)

What a terrible thing to wake up to Janey. I think it would be awful to find them.
We often find small birds or mice outside the back door first thing in the morning but we know who is responsible for that. (Next doors cat "Poppy") She stalks our chooks too but when I hear them clucking away I nip out with the water pistol and give her a little squirt. It doesn't harm her but she does stay away for a few days!

what a shame.... lovely little creatures... we get them flying pas tas it gets dusk....

probably cats - very few animals survive a cat attack. They are the bane of conservationists.

how sad...I love bats...

Very good photos Janey.
Poor little critters, did you bury them in the garden ?

22 Aug, 2010

That is so sad Janey. If you remember we live next to an old church which has bats in the belfry.Often see them flitting around especially around our pond...but have never encountered any casualties...yet...

shame janey, but thanks 4 the close ups . not many people get to c them ,so that was one gud thing, have had the odd one flying around. once we saw a child poking one on a tree and i told her off wth a little tale of how wrong it was to do that . it was just on a tree trunk at dunham gardens .

aww how sad janey, cats can get bats, i had a friend who`s cat was always bringing them home, but luckerly alive, such a shame poor things, we have them here, watch them at night,

Thats a shame Janey, we have bats flying around here but luckily I`ve never found any hurt in any way, they are still an attraction now for my grandchildren.
I`m not being heartless but for the sake of any other bats in your area its better if it was a cat or owl rather than a disease......

Thanks everyone for all the comments. I didn't realize that they would sleep in trees or shrubs till I read about them....always thought they were high up in old buildings.........like you I love to see them at dusk, like creatures from another world going about their lives when most of the rest is asleep....hopefully there'll be more enjoying the garden soon. Hope you didn't mind the pics, I was intrigued to see one close up.....:o)

There's also some bat disease floating around, I can't remember what it is, but US bat populations have declined sharply. There were some news reports about it just a month or so ago. Even as recently as last year I'd see bats flying around every evening at dusk - they were all over the place. I have seen only one bat this whole summer - it had gotten itself stuck inside a bag of apples. From uncountable numbers of bats to only one...it's a little alarming.

22 Aug, 2010

I looked it up - it's called white nose syndrome and the experts say it could drive the common brown bat into extinction within 20 years. Imagine what would happen to our insect populations if that happened.

22 Aug, 2010

Thanks for that Lauram............I'm hoping it was my cats..at least it would be only two less, the white nose syndrome sounds dreadful, we would be inundated with insects.

Oh Janey , how sad for you to find these lovely little Pipistrelles , there seem to be so many infectious diseases to harm all creatures today ,, was it always like this ?

23 Aug, 2010

Yes....I was stunned Amy.......I think it maybe was always like this....just now we can access info so easily....a real shame though.....:o( Are you enjoying those boys of yours....:o))

Just seen this Janey, amazing pics, just so sad. Let's hope it's not a disease. How wonderful to have them by you though, live ones I mean:-)

Hi Ba....it was a shock to find them....I bet it was my cats, I had an email from the local bat society and apparently finding bats like this is usually because cats have killed them. I hope there will be more next year, but there were always just the two flying at dusk......such a shame........

So sorry to read this blog, such fascinating creatures, have never seen one up close, so thanks for that.

Very sad, they are lovely. I have lots in my garden and took one to the vet a couple of years ago, it was laying in the border with a torn wing. I discovered that Wellingborough has a 'Batman' who looks after the injured ones :-)))

Thanks Dotty....I found them intriging, wonderful little creatures.....couldn't believe they were dead on the lawn...:o(
Thanks Annella......good to know there's someone local for you to go to.....I had a letter the other day from the Lincolnshire Bat Society with info about them and to keep your cats in at dusk if not all night, which is the best thing...:o))
