Old Heather bed.

Along the side of the Bungalow was a narrow bed with very overgrown Heathers. They were too far gone to bring back to the correct size and off the ‘grass’. They were also full of couch grass and other deep rooted weeds. We decided to remove them altogether.
There was a very poor Hydrangea on the end of the bed.
The Hydrangea was dug out, with some difficulty. the roots had gone under the path.
Hard work with the loppers and a saw.
I took the remains of the Heathers to the local re-cycling yard.
Digging out the roots was not too hard as they are fairly shallow rooting plants.
Dug over and some humus added.
Plants of various kinds put in.
Not happy with the edge so I cut back more of the ‘grass’ to make a more pleasing and useful shape to the bed.
The crazy paving path alongside the Bungalow looks a lot better too.

I must admit heathers aren't my favourites, either. I don't think they look right in southern gardens! I have a few but I don't see them lasting very long; mostly kept for the insects. Your border will be pretty next year.

A great improvement Ob. Like the new shape of the bed.

Heathers are always okay until they go leggy as with many things, well worth the hard work which I do know about as I've been doing similar, (had to use SBK on a couple of shrubs here though) things are often not pleasing to the eye when stepping back and just looking at ones handiwork, made me smile at you going back to change the shape of the bed, going to be lovely seeing all the planting flourish...
