While we were indoors, shivering and moaning about the weather Our son Simon and his partner Clare were in the Lake District adding four more Wainwrights to their quest to complete all the Wainwright challenges and dont they look happy !
Information regarding the Wainwright Walks.
Alfred Wainwright M.B.E 1907-1991. Famous British Mountain and Fellwalker, Guidebook Author and Illustrator
Was born in Blackburn, Lancashire to a relatively poor family, he did well at school leaving at the age of 13yrs to take up work as an Office Boy with Blackburn Borough Engineering Department. He continued his education at night school taking accountancy in order to further his career.
In 1930 he had saved up enough money to go on a walking holiday to the Lake District with his cousin. This was to be the beginning of his love affair with the “Lakes”
In 1941 he took a pay cut and moved to Westmorland Council so he could be near his beloved Fells. In 1952 he started work on his 7 Volume Pictorial guide books of the Fells. During his lifetime he went onto write mank more books on walking in the British Isles including the Coast to Coast Walk , Pennine Way Companion, Scottish Highlands and many more.
Simon and Clare Have completed 197 of the 214 Lake District " Wainwrights "and have just 17 more to complete, no mean feat as some of the mountains are over 3,000 ft high. They have also done the Coast to Coast walk 192 miles and many others including The West Highland Way , and The Great Glen, Ihere are other blogs on the site for those that may be interested.

oh ~ thanks PP ~ how did i not know that ~ i knew i had heard it before and wondered about the braveheart sound track
if i told you i have nearly all the Enya cds there is really no excuse for me not recognising it!!!
but thank you for that, i thought it was a rather nicely done video! i have seen several programs on wainwright, we have several of his books, but i couldnt find any of them on youtube. your son and his partner have done incredibly well climbing so many of the hills/monroes/fells.

Really honestly speaking, they should have gone with a group, as an accident in this weather could have been serious with Emergency Services having difficulty getting out to them.
22 Jan, 2013
I hope they wait till better weather Carole after seeing that acciedent at Glencoe but I wish them luck for the rest of their walks as I recall you saying he wanted to climb a big rock. I would love to go but affraid wheel chairs would be out of bounds stuck or skiddddd hehe.

Congratulations to the pair of them ... am interested to know how many months/years it has taken them to do the 197 walks? They look healthy and happy on it! ... :o)

I would enjoy walks in summer but would say 'no thanks' to the winter ones! Shall always remember walking in The Algarve (SW Portugal) and coming across field after field of wild Lupins ... an amazing and beautiful sight.

I agree Shirley walking in summer in the Algarve sounds wonderful! Simon and Clare have walked in Spain and Italy Clare was a guide at one time and led walks in the Pyrenees, ;0)
