My (container) garden.

I have to admit I feel like a bit of an impostor because I don’t have a real garden with streams and lots of land…all I have is a balcony which is really a walkway made of concrete where I am trying to create a container garden…so everything I grow is in pots!! Even so, I love my little garden..most of my neighbors have no time for plants, they’d rather have tiny dogs like chihuahuas and shi tzus, or cats that sit on their windowsill and enigmatically watch you walk by. The only neighbors that loved plants as much as I do moved to Miami, from whom, incidentally, I inherited a fern that I’m not too sure what to do with. But so far it seems to be doing OK. It’s still green. !! I’m trying to take some good photos of my plants so I can show you what I have…

I don't think you have to have a garden at all to visit this site, it's worth being a member just to see all the wonderful gardens that other members have. I don't have much of a garden really, my plants are grown in greenhouses. I would say, and i'm sure other members would agree, that if you have an interest in plants you certainly shouldn't feel like an imposter. But if you have a container garden, you have a small garden!

Raquel, I agree with what Mark just posted 100%. Container gardening is definitly a form of gardening. I have seen some wonderful environments created on cement walkways like you have. There is no end as to what you can create by using interesting planters and pots, maybe a small fountain if you can get electricity out there, a couple chairs and a small table to be able to sit, relax and enjoy. If you look through the photos that members have posted in this site I think you will find many beautifully filled containers that will inspire you. Do as I do and be sure to visit a salvage yard or store in your area. You will find some great stuff there that can be added to your container garden. An old garden gate or rusty rail that you could lean againts a wall, a chippy porch post that can be used as a pedestal etc... Good luck with your container garden. I'm looking forward to seeing photos. Who knows, you just may inspire some of your pet loving neighbors to do a little container gardening of their own :) Imposter ? I don't think so.

Hi Raquel,
Brilliant! It sounds like you are doing a great job, and your space can be shared and enjoyed by others.
You ARE gardening, and as our garden is almost entirely a potted and container garden we know that it can take extra efforts and it is hard work at times.
I agree with all the other comments. You are certainly NOT an imposter!!!!!
This is such an excellent site- everyone is so supportive, and we all contribute because we love plants and gardening in many different ways. We can share views and ideas and learn from each other.
Well done again.
With best wishes and kind regards, and happy gardening
Let us know how things progress with your garden.
Grenville.

Raquel Don't let anyone or anything make you feel like you don't belong here!! I garden in a tiny plot and take loads of inspiration from the gardens on here. I am also planning a container garden so please post pics of yours so I can gain more ideas. Thats the great thing here we can all learn something off of another GOY friend!

PLEASE don't feel that you don't belong - every garden on this site is different - but we can all contribute in our different ways because we all love to get our hands dirty and give Nature a helping hand! Learn from Grenville and Alan's wide experience - they grow in containers placed at different levels and just look at their success! Maybe you will grow some different combinations of plants that will inspire them! Post some pictures when you can, we all love to browse. Don't be downhearted. Go for it! You have some new neighbours that love plants now - US. :-)

Hi Raquel,

With all the comment coming your way you must realize that you've found a very special group...
So I will add my encouragement...for many years I lived and gardened in less hospitable climes and on someone else's turf...but it never stopped or discouraged me from enjoying a wonderful passtime and satisfying a soul deep need. I think we become gardeners because, or perhaps, in spite of our urban world. We need the green and growing around us like a security blanket.
You will be the person who brings beauty to a place where your cat/dog loving neighbours will eventually gravitate. It will also bring birds and other creatures..
Time to stop running off at the mouse and get back to my plants...Welcome...and success to you.

Hi, Raquel! "From Concrete to Jungle" should be your motto - go for it! I, and a lot of others here, now doubt, are envious of your location, as you will be able to grow so much more outdoors than we can. Please post a pic of your concrete so that we can see how it develops. My first suggestion is; have pots deeper or higher than a male chihuahua can cock its leg! I grew up with them, got the first as a pet for my 7th birthday. I always remember wondering why my plants wouldn't grow in my own little garden, until i discovered it was his also his toilet! He even keeled over and died of a heart attack with his leg cocked over my attempt at growing carrotsowever,! im However, if I ever caught him in the act, it was at least easy to put him in my coat pocket and take him away, lol!
Anyways, I digress..........looking forward to hearing/seeing how you progress.

Hmmm - that opens up a new line of thought, David! Henry has his own small space in our back garden to be let out at at night, with gates so that he can't dash off into the blackness of the rest of the garden - (we don't have street lights here!) and he has cocked his leg against a small conifer too often with the result that its lower growth is brown and dead. Oooooooooooh dear. Lucky I wasn't over-fond of it! Don't tell Bluespruce!

TOTALLY AGREE WITH MARK,AS I DONT REALLY NO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO CALL YOURSELF A GARDENER ,I GROW VEG AND FLOWERS BUT THAT DOESNT MAKE ME (IN MY OPINION ) ANY MORE OF A GARDENER THAN YOU ,I THINK THE LOVE OF PLANT AND VEG IS ENOUGH TO ENABLE PEOPLE TO COMMENT ON BLOGS AND SUCH ON THIS BRILL WEB SIGHT G O Y SO YOU JUST KEEP GROWING WHATEVER YOU CAN AND CALL YOURSELF A MEMBER OF G O Y ..GOOD LUCK .. SEEYA.

Hi Raquel, even those of us with larger gardens use containers too, I have blueberries in containers to give them an acid soil and a lemon tree so that I can bring it insde in the winter, I used the first two lemons this week. If you have sunny balcony you could try some fruit, a strawberry stack perhaps, or might others be tempted? LOL. Welcome and enjoy the site.

Hi Raquel! My "gardens" are just tiny areas in the yard & nothing fancy, my gardening knowledge can use a lot of improvement, but I love plants and growing them. This site is the best - full of wonderful people and great advice. The most important thing is to enjoy what you do and to share that enjoyment with others. No one here sits in judgement, we just love to look at gardens, plants, offer advice when needed, and chat with each other. I hope you will feel welcome here and enjoy the website!

Hey ho! Welcome to this mad gardening community! As far as I'm concerned, if you've got a weed growing, then you've got a garden - it's just that you've got the wrong plant! I've got a relatively large garden, but it's lawn and patio 50/50. I only grow things in containers, mainly veggies! There will be some bulbs over winter, but as soon as next year comes along we'll be back to veggies again! And I'm new to this site as well! It's great - just keep looking and writing!
