Into our second year

Amy, when I saw that top picture all those months ago, my heart sank. It just looked like a horrendous job. And then, when you got started and found all the concrete under the gravel.....my heart sank again for you! But look at what you've achieved already! You've done a brilliant job and I love your scree garden. I'm fascinated with the flints...they are really different. I love the shapes. You could even grow houseleeks in them couldn't you! They are all characters in their own right. Congratulations on a job well begun!

You have made a lot of progress in just a year, Amy! The scree garden is quite a move away from "traditional" soil based gardening - I like it as well!

Thanks all for your kind comments it has been hard work but at least we can see the light at the end of the tunnel , Karen I love those flints I couldn't leave them behind gosh were they heavy to move yes I can put house leaks in the holes I have done that previously and as for the concrete in the back garden I'm not sure if we'll ever overcome that I tried planting ground cover plants along a path back there but couldn't break through the concrete to plants them only in a few odd spots also the horse tail is growing again I'm out every morning with my paintbrush dabbing it hoping it will one day be gone ....

I knew it wouldn't take you and Tony long to get started. A year goes by faster these days doesn't it? veggie gardening isn't my first love...but it sure pays off in delicious ways.
I was wondering if you could find something occlusive to put over the concrete wasteland? I used a piece of pond liner to eradicate some horrid weed that's like tanglefoot... bindweed? ... it blocks the light very efficiently and even stops seeds from germinating. in the sun it stores a lot of heat and that may be what stops the weeds..they're literally cooked! downside is... it's just plain ugly. a case of what's worse...the curse or the cure? I've also used a little copper kettle full of boiling water.. dribbling boiling water on the weed seedlings coming up between pavers kills them to the root and you just sweep them away. the earthworms are back and the robins are happy.
I can't believe we've been here 9 years. my progress does not compare to yours...

Amy, I'm amazed at the size and shapes of those flints, they are gorgeous! We have many walls made of flints down here in Sussex, but nothing to rival those. Garden looks great ... :o)

Dawn /Lori you wouldn't think the Horsetail could get any light here where there isn't concrete in the back section theres some kind of black cover under the gravel ,I've witnessed the Jackdaws scuffling the gravel away to pluck at the threads of the black stuff presumably to take to their nests it's quite fascinating to watch them . 9 years Lori you must be well and truly settled by now ..

All that hard work is certainly starting to pay off,Amy,and It's great to have a new project with your scree garden ..those flints are fantastic...I'm sure you will get it just as you want it,if your determination has anything to do with it ! lol.Congrats to Tony too,his veggie patch looks great :o xx

I see a plan taking shape. I'm curious to see how you transform the space to make it your own. I never heard of a scree garden so here's my chance to find out. Amazing what you can do with such a small space. Happy Anniversary in your new home.
