Beautiful roses!

I noticed today that my ‘American pillar’ rose started coming out; they are so simple and beautiful to me. Because of the weather they are coming too early, but I can’t complain, they are so lovely arching around the walls. The astrantia major are doing well; I think they are my favourite flower, intricate, delicate and so simply pleasing. I don’t like big, blowsy flowers or architectural ‘statements’ but delicate and pleasing little plants like the astrantia and the lambium orvala, the nettle like plant with delicious pink mouths beneath the leaves. I do love heleniums though, their simplicity delights me, though of course they aren’t out yet, and can’t wait to see their delicate, drooping petals. The dusky geranium is delightful, and might be getting the ‘chelsea chop’ soon, though it is a very young plant (pretty all of my plants are very young, bought or stolen or divided) I want some more later. I love the way geraniums look so lacy, not a carpet of leaves, but a delicate, weave of leaves, supported by spindly stems; like a 3D chessboard.
Planted three autumn ‘autumn bliss’ raspberries yesterday, left the sprinkler on for a while to really water the soil before putting them in. They are starting to push out through the roots so didn’t really know where to plant, so just around the line above the roots, and I will monitor it for a few weeks until we see some life! Stupidly bought some raspberries at the boot fair on Thursday, got them home, very bedraggled (both raspberries and myself!) and found them drooping terribly. Plunged them immediately in a bucket of water, but they are terribly traumatizd, the lady didn’t seem to care about them, she just wanted the money. She didn’t know what kind of raspberries, just ‘autumn’ ones. I am leaving them for a while, give them time to recover and water deeply when needed; hopefully they will survive. Even if we don’t get any raspberries this year, at least we have the thought of next year, and I haven’t lost five pounds!
Well, back to the watering. Sigh…….

What a pretty rose - I've been told that roses whose stamens are in full view like this are better for bees as bees find it very difficult to get any pollen from the old fashioned English ones etc that have so many petals that the stamens are all concealed.

I've always loved the American Pillar rose, I have some cuttings coming on, so hopefully one day I will get some of my own. Thanks for showing.

The American pillar rose has gone mad, even the first year I planted it it started arching all over the place! I prefer simple flowers, I don't like blowsy ones, and as I am trying to create a bee and butterfly haven, I am happy I have done the right thing by buying the rose loved by the bees! The photos are not bad, the astrantia was okay, but it doesn't show the beautiful deep rose inside, I will try again with my camera! I might try some cuttings myself on the American pillar, it is such a beauty, but it doesn't last long unfortunately, June and July and gone!

Now I feel guilty, because I have forgotten the name of my autumn fruiting raspberries. I can understand why the lady had some to dispose of - they pop up all over the place, even yards away from the parents. I have given loads away this spring.
