Question:
Do you have jobs in the garden that you really dislike doing?

I have been spending many weeks looking at our front fencing and gates. They were peeling and covered in green algae(?) and have been hitting me in the eye for at least a year. Staining them is a job I detest as I know that with the weather and the cats using them as a scratching post we shall be back to square one before too long. It’s definitely a ‘Forth Bridge’ undertaking!

I have used my pinched nerve as an excuse for ignoring them up until now, as I literally could not have done it until recently. So I have spent the last few mornings painting the drive gates (that never get used) and the paling and posts whilst gritting my teeth.. I still have more to do. OH has heroically painted fences back and front and has a side gate to finish off. Definitely feeling my age.

So, I should be interested to know if you are all “paragons of virtue” and love all gardening jobs or if there are outstanding jobs that you hate doing too. Or am I alone in thinking life’s too short for some jobs? Weeding, anyone??

I'm glad you've got the painting done, but I think a pinched nerve is a good reason, and not an excuse at all :)

I don't think there's anything I actually hate doing in the garden, but there are things I keep putting off because other things are higher on the priority list.

One thing I keep putting off is tidying around the entrance to my two perspex shelters, but I suppose I'll get it done one day. I'll have to put off doing something else instead.

I don't think I have anything I hate, but I don't have railings or gates to paint or preserve. Only a gate through to my greenhouse, which is dropping off its hinges! I think my greenhouse really needs a good tidy. Under the staging I've brambles growing up, and so many lumps of moss all over the glass outside, I think they're holding it together!
I've a pinched nerve too Ange so I can commiserate with you. We have to be careful and look after ourselves says she who doesn't!

Hywel, I know what you mean about putting things off - housework comes into that category in the summer for me! - in my case it's deciding what to do first in the garden. I make a rod for my own back with too many pots and too many plants still waiting to be planted. If only I could resist buying plants I have no place for...

Sorry to hear you have suffered too, Janey. I have had so many nights of only one or two hours sleep, but much better now except for pins and needles! I hope you're improving too. There always seems to be something waiting for attention, doesn't there? It's a matter of juggling what to do first.. I feel overwhelmed every year at this point and I have no-one else to blame for that feeling. Self-control isn't a strong point!!

Like Julia, it would have been patio cleaning but we had it done by professionals recently.
I make compost in a 'Dalek' style bin and absolutely hate turning the contents over, emptying it out and barrowing it to the flower borders! Then again, it really does help with the Sussex clay soil ... :o)

Cleaning the patio is our next job, Meadow - something to look forward to!

Shirley, I had one of those daleks years ago. I couldn't work it when it was getting full!

Ange, I have a long-handled garden fork that has proved so useful for turning the top foot or so over. I only empty it out twice a year, that's quite enough!
