Finally venturing out.

For the past 10 weeks I have effectively ignored the garden, hating the usual winter weather we have here in the south of rain, wind and stormy, grey clouds. The garden has been left to its own devices so hopefully the overwintering insects will have had plenty of shelter even if it looks a shocker!
Today I donned my trusty vagrant’s warm coat and attacked some of the hellebore leaves. I don’t know really whether I think these plants are worth the bother of growing them here. Mine have nasty black-spotted leaves, particularly in the winter, but they do look a little more reputable since they have been denuded!

My favourite shade: it seems to be casting its seed far and wide. We have some interesting mixes growing on.

My favourite: a simple but pleasing plant.

Having said I prefer the simpler flowers, my OH did a bit of self-gifting this weekend past. Here’s his impulse buy ‘Ice ’n Roses’: “Red Romance”. A bit of a mouthful and rather startling!

Finally, a few other spring surprises:
Self-sown coums; snowdrops in the greenhouse and in the ground. The last an Elwesii type. I don’t know which one unless I dig it up to rummage for the label…

Once they have gone over we hope to put all our clumps of different snowdrops together in the raised beds where we can keep an eye on the different types. We’ve lost a lot in the few years we have lived here.
I have still to cut back the hellebores under the birch. They seem to be proliferating too. More yellows and whites in that area. it doesn’t look like the weather is going to be on my side for a while to get the job completed.

I like the one your hubby chose, the flowers are more erect. You have a very good selection. I don’t grow them, not enough space I guess.

Your Hellebores are definitely worth keeping Ange, don’t they more or less look after themselves? And I think it’s lovely that your OH went and chose a plant himself … I’ve tried to persuade my OH to do just that but he won’t. He is looking after the tête-à-tête daffs though 🙂. I love the snowdrops in your greenhouse.

I love the Hellebores Ange and what fine clumps they are, much larger than any of mine. They stay the same! I do agree with Ff and Sheila, hubbys choice is a beauty and my favourite is pic number 3. Snowdrops are late in my garden, still tiny tight little buds..:(

Thanks for all your comments. I was very surprised this year to see so many flowering seedlings. I know a lot of the fancy ones are sterile.

Well done you for getting out there Ange!
I have still to do it! You have a lovely collection of Hellebores and loved the one your husband bought.
It was nice to see the start of spring flowers.
I had quite a lot of bluebells and snowdrops in my woodland garden, which I had planted last year, but I had to get help to sort this garden out as it had been taken over by the huge anemones and unfortunately I think most of the little bulbs would have been dug up.

I'm loving your hellebores, Ange! I can understand why you've held off venturing out in to the garden!
I look out and think..how horrible! Cold, sludgy in spots, things looking a bit ropey..
I'm definitely chopping the leaves off soon - as per watching Carol Klein recently - wish I'd done this in previous years!
Your colours are so pretty! I like them, although, like you, as you say, the leaves aren't great to look at.

Rose, I hope you are wrong about your small bulbs. It is frustrating and too easy to dig them up. I suspect that is why we have many fewer crocuses than heretofore!

Thanks, Kate. I usually do mine in November but forgot this year.

I love the Hellebores ... but such a shame they hang their heads down! I feel the need to do some gardening, but the weather is so chilly and damp that the most I have done is move some Cyclamen to the border from pots!

Paul, I'm still waiting to get outside to finish the cutting back. Unfortunately, the one clear day we had to get it done I was otherwise engaged!

Shirley, we've had 2 clear days since I wrote this but too wet to do anything. The ground is saturated. I feel your frustration!

Ange, this morning was sunny, yes it was actually sunny, so I had a look around the garden and found some Primroses, Hellebores and Snowdrops in flower which cheered me up no end. A Robin was singing away high up in a beech tree and Goldfinches were enjoying the sunflower hearts in the feeders so it was a joy to be outdoors.
OH sharpened and oiled my secateurs, all six pairs of them, also the long handled edging shears and a small pruning saw so I'm ready to garden now!
