Winter in the garden

Because it’s been so mild over the last few months there are plants in flower that would normally be dormant. Primroses and wallflowers left over from last year are doing well as are my potted geraniums, unwittingly left out. Even having snow on them hasn’t curbed their desire to bloom. They were in a fairly sheltered spot but now I’ve taken pity on them and put them in the conservatory where they’re taking up too much room. I shall prune and repot in Spring and also take cuttings – usually by shoving bits in the ground. Two from last year are thriving in a raised bed.
The mahonia, planted last year, is now flowering in a shady corner and brightening it up, plus the new honeysuckle is leafing and climbing steadily up the fence.
Because the ground has been so wet though I cannot put in 3 clematis, the pyracantha or the cotoneaster horizontalis I’ve recently bought. All will now have to wait until the ground dries some and the weather warms. They are sitting comfortably outside in their pots in a sheltered corner.
So there’s plenty to do if only the weather would play ball!

I know just how you feel ... I managed to spread the contents of one small compost bin around the borders today. Grass too wet to mow and borders too soggy to tidy up. My two recently purchased Clematis are waiting in the unheated greenhouse ... just hoping for some dry weather soon.
