A little bit more energetic

After months of horrid weather and the usual SAD plus several ongoing health problems which sapped my energy, I finally managed (after a fairly longish walk) to get outside today as the sun was shining and it wasn’t as cold or wet. My ticker wasn’t too happy but I told it to be quiet and managed to cut back a lot of dead stuff – things like Eryngium and Phlox. I did leave my hydrangea as I almost lost it last winter by being too eager to tidy up. However, the garden does still look rather miserable despite a show of snowdrops which seem fewer this year, and some cheerful yellow crocuses. The Sarcococca beside my front door is blooming but for some reason isn’t scenting the air as it usually does. Maybe there hasn’t been enough sun. Still, the primroses are beginning to flower and there are buds on the daffodils. So it’s a sure sign of new life and that spring is just around the corner.

On my walk the wild plum blossom is appearing but I didn’t stop to sniff it as it was up a small bank and I didn’t fancy losing my balance -too embarrassing! Lovely to see it though.

I hope you are all healthy and able to continue with your gardening.

I am in a similar situation as my cardiac issues forbade me from doing too much in the garden now. It is very frustrating, even more so as I had a couple of gardeners in yesterday to prune and shape some shrubs that had grown too tall and/or wide. I never imagined I would need help in the garden at seventy years young!

Today we have persistent rain, it's cold too, so it's definitely an indoors day. I bet the wild plum blossom looks wonderful.

I’m so glad you got out Arbuthnot. None of us is getting younger. I have a lot of aches and pains these days myself. I’m looking forward to having a ‘pottering’ garden instead of a full time job. I hope the weather is a bit more spring like soon, but February always brings snow to the North. Here in the south it’s very wet. But I’ll be on the look out for some pretty Bergenias for under my front hedge this week!

Thanks for all the like minded comments. After being healthy all my adult life Fate decided that once I got to 80 it was my turn to put up with health problems! Also, in the current NHS situation waits for consultants are ultra long. Six months ago one hospital gave me an appointment for January 2025! I cancelled it.

Yes, we have a lot of wild plum trees in this area of Buckingham and they look beautiful. Even the flooded park looks lovely! No gardening today and probably the rest of the week or until my overused knees and back ease up. Still, spring is on its way and hopefully better weather. So stay upbeat and think kindly of all the slugs and snails we’ll have to deal with! :)

Arbuthnot, yesterday I picked up a dozen or so pots in the greenhouse and was annoyed to find small slugs and snails lurking within and/or clinging on to the base of the pots. They are all in the brown bin now ... the S&S ... not the pots!

Lovely blog, Arbuthnot, I did enjoy hearing what you have blooming in.your garden.
However, the mind is willing as the saying goes..unfortunately. I imagine you'd like to do more out in the garden, but the body does let you down.
Thankfully, we don't know what's ahead, healthwise..I do hope the emerging Spring flowers and lighter evenings are giving you some joy.
I do understand your feelings regarding the waiting times for appointments. Things seem to get worse don't they. I'm a community nurse, and I do get frustrated and I feel for the people out there that I look after and care about. Its really quote sad and frightening.
Hopefully, we will have a lovely year ahead in our gardens, lots of lovely sunshine and pretty blooms...therapy in itself.

Arbuthnot, not so long now until much longer daylight hours and warmer weather. Nearer to the end of winter than the beginning of it thank goodness. It does lift your spirits seeing all the new growth in the gardens.

I agree, it’s maddening being over 80 isn’t it … zero energy in my case! But it must have been satisfying to be outside and get some things done. I would love to have done the same as we’ve had sunshine today and no wind, but painkillers for a damaged wrist have not been working … grrr. Thank goodness for lighter evenings and spring flowers everywhere to cheer us all 🙂.
