I will continue to indulge myself as my Autumn babies spring to life. A fortnight ago I pointed out the first snowdrop just breaking the surface, I know some of you have seen them before but I love them, so you have to see them again.lol
Autumn flowering Saxifraga
As Above
Pretty Anemone name is on it but to dark to look
Note there are no leaves on the snowdrops and the cyclamen leaves just starting to grow the same applies with some autumn crocus as well, they grow as the flowers start to go over there must be a reason does any one know the answer I have never heard one
Another Saxifraga with red/bronze leaves
I like having my Photo taken ! these are my 8th Birthday pictures, have not told him but he is only here to make up the numbers.
Don’t think I will tell him he could get upset from the look of it.

Happy Birthday Jamie, hope you got a new toy...
Brian you are making me envious showing these, I simply cannot get any autumn crocus to grow here or the cyclamen, don't know why, I'm obviously doing something wrong, love the saxifraga as well, another one I must look out for.........

First things first..... Happy Birthday Jamie x I hope you have had a good day!
All looking great Brian, your question Re flowers before leaves, I wonder if it may be to attract the attention of pollinators which are by now a bit scare.
I had that bronzed leafed Saxifraga..... Wonder what happened to, must investigate tomorrow!

Surprised you are not able to grow Cyclamen they thrive in shade or Sun have you tried growing them from seed or corms?,they are very unreliable in packets from garden centres they have usually been dried out for months.

lol. lovely pictures, but you saved the best 'til last. lol. Love the cyclamen, they are so pretty, mine are out but not as showy as yours. But they are great at this time of year, think the rain has helped them come on as we have been so dry now that it is a bit wetter they are starting to flower for me. Happy Birthday Jamie. lol.

Happy Birthday Jamie. You will soon be a pensioner like the rest of us. You are still a puppy at heart. I hope the cameraman rewarded you for all the hard work he makes you do, taking him on long walks and playing ball to keep him happy.
Bjs your plants are exquisite. The snowdrops and cyclamen mixture look great together. No sign yet of my autumn snowdrops. We do seem to be a bit behind you so I have not given up on them yet. I noticed some of last years cyclamen are showing leaves, the spring flowering ones. I bought a Cyclamen Tilebarn Elizabeth at the Gardening Club. We had a speaker from Binny and he brought along some bulbs etc. I also bought some more Cammassia Leichtlinii Caerula. Its a brilliant bulb.

Great to see you back Val.

Love the snowdrop and cyclamen combination and the saxifraga are lovely. Happy Birthday to the handsome Jamie.
16 Oct, 2013
Jamie gets more handsome each year, perhaps its because he has such a lovely garden to play in.
16 Oct, 2013
Jamie, you're looking better than ever. Happy birthday!
never seen snowdrops in October before - they go so well with the cyclamen. what variety are the cyclamen please?
16 Oct, 2013
Steragram
The Cyclamen Variety is Cilicium a little smaller than the one normally seen in gardens this time of year (Hederifolium ) although fairly hardy it gets flattened by hard rain so tend to grow them in troughs within the cover of the alpine house, they are also much easier to admire that way same applies with the snowdrop (Galanthus Reginae-Olgae ) its hardy but requires a dry warm summer that is hard to achieve in my garden outside. It is also a little smaller than our winter flowering varieties.
Nothing in that Trough has been disturbed for at least six years and they continue to increase.

I have tried corms from various sources Brian and have bought many plants over the years, they start off ok but rarely return, our garden goes from parts that are full sun all day down to the bottom that is in shade completely from lunchtime onwards, I just cannot find a spot that suits them, my daughter has them naturalized in her garden so hoping to have yet another attempt, I've never tried growing them from seed though.....

If your daughter has them naturalized look around the base of the plants for seedlings with one or two leaves if you can carefully lift with the corm and root intact they should transplant into almost any situation.
They should not be confused with the ones being shown on Goy at present bought from supermarkets and stores they are a totally different plant and might last a year or two but often do not go through the first winter.
the main difference is geographical they come from hotter climates
17 Oct, 2013
Thank you Bjs. I haven't got an alpine house or a suitable trough at present - the hederifolium I have are under my damson tree and I am hoping to replace the pink ones that have disappeared. Would it be worth risking them there or do I have to make an alpine trough?? We do get very heavy rain sometimes.
17 Oct, 2013
They should be fine under a tree lots of mine are in deep shade where they have seeded themselves.
Troughs often come into there own with small plants that can get swamped by larger ones.
18 Oct, 2013
They won't get swamped by plants there as I keep the bit near the trunk free from everything except cyclamen and crocuses. I'm really looking forward to seeing them next year!!
