A Mid-Summer Wander Through The Spectacle Garden at the Roma Street Park...

I’ve just recently returned from a quick visit to see my eldest son and grandchildren. Whilst I was there, I took the grandkids into the city of Brisbane to visit my favourite spot …

Roma Street Parkland, an 11 hectare parkland in the centre of the city.

In the middle of the parkland is a secluded space known as The Spectacle Garden.

It’s a space formed around a trail of walking paths where the focus is on flowers and foliage, and it’s the space I spend the most time in whenever I’m visiting the parkland.

The Spectacle Garden is not just about flowers however.

There are sculptures.

One of my favourite item is the newly created “Barbara Binny the Bin Chicken”.

This piece is one of many similar pieces scattered throughout the city of Brisbane created by a Brisbane artist. It’s a playful way of making the humble White Ibis a celebrity.

We affectionately refer to these native Australian birds as “bin chickens” because they are opportunistic scavengers that are often found around rubbish dumps and rubbish bins!

Roma Street Parkland has a number of water features,

including the Spectacle Garden waterfall and river that reflect the natural spring that once flowed through the area.

There are some fabulous scaly guests that can often be seen while wandering around the Spectacle Garden. The Australian Water Dragon, a very large lizard, can be seen basking in the sun or

munching on a banana skin as we witnessed during our visit.

I've been taking my grandchildren there for nearly 15 years now, ever since they were little children. It became a bit of a tradition that whenever I visited them, we would all go to the Parklands.

The eldest doesn't come with me any more, as she's now an adult and often working when I visit, but the ones in their late teens still like to visit the place with me.
