Mysterious case of the Wilts

Hoping to prolong the colour on the patio into Winter I planted up some Cylamen in a few pots and have been enjoying my display from the dining room window. This morning I found one of the Cyclamen flopping over in a sorry state and have no idea what could have happened to it.

As you can see, it has buds on it and the leaves are still green, not sickly looking at all!

I planted all the Cyclamen at the same time and they have been in situ for about a month.

The other pots look healthy (and pert!) at the moment, Any ideas as to what has caused this, anyone?

Have you looked at the rootball of this plant...it may have the dreaded vine weevil in there....
The rest of them look lovely!!

Vine weevil? Okay, I'll dig it out and have a look - is it salvageable? Thanks Amblealice.

Only if the roots haven't been eaten....by the looks of the plant, they have!
It may have to go to the great compost heap in the sky (sorry!)
PS: it will be the grubs, little fat creamy/yellow things (yuk!!)

Ewww, just what you want first thing in the morning a little fat grub!

They are horrid, devious little critters who eat from the bottom up & so you don't know what's occuring until you get the flop effect! You can't miss them in the soil. Yuk Yuk Yuk!!!

Does that mean they will kill the other plants in the pot too? They dont seem to be affected.

Well I have an old kitchen sink planted up with succulents & others & they only ate the succulents so maybe they are fussy!

They could "get at" your fuschia....I would tip them all out and throw away the compost. Is your fuchsia a hardy one? if not you will need to bring it indoors soon anyway, so I suggest you pot it up in a small pot with clean compost and put it in its winter quarters. Good luck!!

and dont forget to have a very lose look at the roots as they burrow into them. It does look like typical vine weevil damage though. but keep an eye on the others just in case. I'd do as amblealice suggests. :o)

Good luck with your plants and pots...
I hope you can remove any meanie vine weevil grubs !

Thanks for your comments, I have emptied the pot and re-potted the fuschia (it is a hardy one) there were small maggoty looking things in the soil so I guess it was vine weevil - is it a beetle that lays eggs in the soil which then hatch into those things? I can see I'm going to have to look up some details on pests and bugs!
