A bit of a Pickle

Back in the heady days of summer when the veg garden was in full swing I unexpectedly and excitingly had quite a glut of various fruit and veg so I did what any self respecting veggie grower would do and sat down with a cuppa and a book on how to store, pickle and preserve your produce.
After much page turning I found instructions on how to pickle cucumbers.
Off I toddled to buy the pickling vinegar and set about the (somewhat) lengthy process of making my own pickled gherkins….
After cleaning and preparing the cue’s I salted them (as instructed) and left them overnight. Next day I packed them in a Kilner Jar with some Dill, Peppercorns, a little Sugar and topped up with Vinegar. Looking good!!!!
They were placed in the top of the larder with the greedy anticipation of some crunchy delights to have with the cold meats and cheeses served during our festive season.
Fast Forward Five Months….
This morning I decided to try my home made pickled cucumbers – don’t want to serve up a disaster to my guests – confidence over embarrassement any day!
Here they are….
If anyone wants some pickled cucumber mush to serve over Christmas do let me know – I have a whole Kilner jar full of it….
Must dash – off to the shops to buy some pickled gherkins….
Can’t win them all eh?! :0)

I think Spritz that the cucumbers I used weren't suitable for pickling - they were the small variety but since then I have found out that you can get cucumbers specifically for pickling....put this one down to experience eh? LOL

Clarice - Im glad you liked the blog - I thought it was quite funny which is why I wrote it - its just part of the experience of preserving our home grown - I would say that before you pickle make sure you have the correct cucumbers for the job...;o))

I'm not being rude but this did make me laugh. Im sorry it didnt work out, but I have had plenty of things go wrong in the kitchen as well as the garden.
I can safely say that after last summer I am now quite an expert on fruit cakes. This is because it took me three attempts to use the right tin, the right fruit as well as following recipies right.
Better luck next time. Chalk it up as experiance.

Joanella/Treesandthings - Its fairly hilarious that we can get all superior cos we are growing our own and pickling, preserving and baking - then nature gives us a little kick to remind us that we don't know everything...LOL and I wouldn't mind a recipe for your fruit cake TandT!
Sandra - I dont think this stuff would sell a million bottles - although I could market it as a drain cleaner ;0))
Jac - I was just disappointed because I couldn't show off to all the relatives over Christmas! I went and bought some of the real thing...LOL

You could take the shop bought gherkins and put them into your kilner jar Liz. You wouldn't be lying if you said you had pickled some this year while producing them for everyone to try. You just have to be careful not to say that these were/weren't the same ones! Lol ;~))

recipe for pickled cucumber
about 3 cucumbers sliced put into a large bowl sprinkle well with salt and cover with cold water and loads of ice, put a plate on top tokeep all under water Leave for 3 Hours
Next 1 Cup of sugar and 1 cup of white vinager
put in a large saucepan with mustard seed and dill( if liked)
bring to the boil stirring to dissolve sugar
drain and rinse the cucumber ( to remove the salt) and add to saucepan, Gently stir them back to the boil-- they begin to change colour slightly--
Immediatly pot into prepared jars and when cool I keep them in the fridge--
leave for about 1 month
we love them mild and slightly crispy
enjoy!

making pickles :-))))))
you can put strips of peppers in and onion sliced if you like and change the herbs and spices just remember equal quantities of White sugar and WHITE vinager and chill them altogether with the cues--- I think its the iced water & salt that makes them crispy !

Thanks so much Pam - I will make a note for next year.

Good laugh, buzzylizzie, but sorry it did not work out.
Does anybody have any ideas for preserving cucumbers for a peasant who doesn't particulary like pickles.

Oh - what a shame! Any ideas as to what went wrong?
Maybe you could invent a pickled gherkin sauce for a recipe - so as not to waste the bottle! :-)))
