Thanks to everyone for your warm welcome! I’ve put up some photos of the gravel garden I’ve been working on for the last couple of years – it’s a work in progress to hide the wall and the telegraph pole… using clematis and hostas at the moment but have added grassess area and heather area as well as a hot summer bed to see what happens…
I have planted a small acer and an unusual weeping witch hazel in this bed and this year a new viburnum… never sure if they’ll take or not but just have to see what seems to grow well and design round it.

Advice I was given is always water a young tree well, especially for the first year. Even if it has been raining, water the trees anyway. Make sure the water gets to the roots.
Perhaps even push an old milk bottle into the ground with the base cut out, so that you can pour water lower under the soil. I did this with my Miyako (you can see the photo of its spring blossom this year on my home page). The Miyako is a very young tree, but the regular watering really helped it to establish last year.
Your garden is coming along nicely. Well done :o)
