Autumn at Stourhead

We both love visiting Stourhead, and we try to go at least every couple of weeks so we can see every change in the seasons. My favourite time of year is May, with Autumn a very close second. We have yet to visit the house, but hopefully we will get inside there this festive season when it is at its best with all the decorations.

I hope you enjoy the photos. I’ve been observing the rhododendron collection very closely. I saw no flowers in September, but they are now beginning to start again, and one had three little pink blooms on it yesterday. The Rhododendrons were always stunning in Scottish gardens and I am happy to report that they are just as lovely here, where we also have slightly acidic soil.

Thanks for the photos & good to see the Stourhead unchanged. Used to visit, but walking problems stopped that, and walking around Stourhead is one of its joys and pleasures.

Picturesque place.
The last photo I'm sure is the same view as seen in a Miss Marple film with Joan Hickson ... Nemesis I think, where she goes on a bus trip and solves a crime. It must have been filmed there.

Your photos show what a stunning place Stourhead is. It must be an absolute joy seeing all its beauty up close.

I'd love to visit here, too far, but I can always enjoy your pics Karen. ☺️
It's looking splendid in autumn. Is that a viburnum in pic 3? Such pretty berries and flowers together..

Hi Grandad…I’m glad you enjoyed the memories. I have fallen in love with Stourhead. We both have. My hip hurts so much by the time we get back to the car though. It’s worth it.

Hywel, thank you for commenting. You have a great memory and I’m sure you will be right as it has been filmed many times, including for Pride and Prejeudice.

Thank you Gardenleaves!

Bernie, it is such a beautiful, peaceful place. It is the perfect walk to forget about all of the horrors of the world for a while.

Hi Janey, it’s a long way from you. And not easy to get to either. Your best bet would probably be a coach holiday. They have many coach parties turning up at the car park. I expect they are touring the South West…Bath, Wells etc. I don’t think I could cope with that though…too travel sick. Yes! viburnum. It’s second flowering. It has a tiered habit, so probably mariesii which does flower twice, even in Scotland.

Well it is a lovely one, if I only had room!
My friend and I had a lovely coach trip to Cornwall in May. It was a gardens trip and we enjoyed the Lost Gardens of Heligan with beautiful rhododendrons, you would love it. Lanhydrock Estate Gardens which we found not for us and the Eden Project.
I kept trying to post a blog, but it wouldn't have it! That was when the site was playing up. I could try again.

Yes a coach trip to Dorset may have a day trip to Stourhead...now there's a thought...:))

It’s in Wiltshire Janey, but maybe Dorset too and Somerset is also very close. I have been to Heligan and the Eden project. Heligan was tremendous. I remember it well. You’re right, I did love it. Eden was also memorable.

Yes, the South West has a plethora of gardens … must be the gentle climate! We saw Eden when it was being built, Trebah and Glendurgan when Steve lived nearby, but I think Heligan was my favourite 🙂.

Lovely blog, Karen. I know that I’ve visited this garden, but I don’t remember when! I recognise the little house by the lake & the view if the bridge & lake. Old age creepeth on I’m afraid. I forget so much, it’s a bit worrying.:-(

It was possibly a long time ago Feverfew! I mean, who remembers much from a long time ago? Not me.

Lovely blog, Karen. What a smashing day to visit too...beautiful autumn colours.
I'm loving the old fireplace with the strategically placed pumpkins - very artistic.
We've not been to Stourhead, but, we've been to Heligan..which OH and I thoroughly enjoyed.
You've captured your visit so perfectly!
