Talking about Bindweed roots

penetrating iron ore mining tunnels 40 feet down.
Reminded me this morning whilst I was weed clearing -
years ago a gang of boys found an insecure iron grating in the fields between Finedon and Irthlingborough.
They pulled it up and found a tunnel. So they went down and entered the labyrinth of old ironstone tunnels, that stretch 3 miles under the fields between the two towns.
After some time they realised they could not find their way out. They were lost.
Fortunately, someone knew they were there, that they had not come out. Alerted their parents. Who called the Police.
The rescue operation took 10 hours. Everyone was very concerned. The Police had to trace some elderly men who worked in these mines, years before that. They
knew these tunnels, remembered them, and went down, tied together for safety. It was a long time after that, when they found the boys.
The landowner put the grating back and concreted over it. So the Bindweed roots are still there.
Whether modern weedkillers penetrate 40 feet down I do not know.

To say nothing of what their parents must have felt! I don't think even agricultural strength weedkiller gets that deep though Diane!

We used to go into the old mine shafts on the mountains around here. I was too afraid to go in too far. It was probably a good job.
