book ‘Rock Gardening’ that Gentians should be in lime
free compost. No wonder mine died on me.
Will set up the planter with Ericaceous compost and invest
in some more. Older and wiser now.

There are some species that tolerate /grow in lime. I have had one for about 4 years.

Thanks Diane - and Sbg . . . I sometimes wish that plant labels gave more information! They're certainly happy in 'rocky' habitats - wonderful to see drifts of them in the Dolomites a few years ago :)
