Duckys' new Ducky

Yesterday we gained a new family member.

After picking my girlies up from school, I was flagged down by a friend who lives nearby. She had been watching a tiny duckling which was all alone for quite some time. Mother duck and the rest of the brood were nowhere in sight and junior had tried to attach itself to my ducks who just were not interested.

The problem is that the stream runs parallel to the road, and we were worried that if tiddler didnt re-unite with Mum then it was a likely candidate for being squashed or eaten by the local cats/foxes.

Baby was watched for several more hours and still no sign of Mum – so I got a call and now we have a baby to look after

I tried to introduce it to the chickens, as the ducks were not interested – but unfortunately the chickens were not impressed at all. So I dug out the old vivarium that we had for our tortoise (that ran away) as that has a heat lamp.

so now ‘Beaky’ as the girls have called it has taken up residence in the kitchen for a bit. Hopefully the little soul will survive. Hubby did a bit of googling to find out what such tiny ducklings eat, apparantly its mostly invertabrates at this age – so Beaky has a tiny dish of defrosted fish food, which will hopefully do the trick – but any ideas would be appreciated if any of you have had dealings with an abandoned duckling.

LoL Ducky

I found a Duck Egg Hatching Only Last friday & took it to the Wildlife Centre 8miles away as its Mum had gone off with all the Others & not bothered to wait 4 this 1 egg 2 hatch? They z its normal 4 Mother Ducks 2 do this as theyv so many Eggs any weak/Un Hatched Chicks are left behind :( If u do have a wildlife centre near by my advice would be to take it there as itd give a better chance of Surviving :)

Thanks Jacque - Our local wildlife centre is only fairly small and is already inundated with similar abandoned ducklings, they suggested that I try a local farm or the RSPCA. :o( , I have brought on ducks before from about the 6 week stage and hatched a couple of chickens, so I have decided to give Beaky a chance with us. if he/she grows up it can live in with my chickens in the chicken garden - I guess that I will be building a small pond in there if that proves to be the case!

He is a cutie. So lovely of you to give him a chance with your flock. Have you tried digging some earthworms for him?
Do you have a feed store nearby or farm supply store. They might have a line of duck feed especially for young ducks. I know with the chickens they had a specially formulated chick feed which was very fine for the chicks.

Thursday - 2 days in Beaky is doing really well - I have tried him/her on live bloodworms and daphnia from the aquatics shop , we have also introduced a tub into the vivarium which has some pond weed and water weed covered pebbles from the bottom of the brook. The live food is vanishing at an astounding pace - so Im going to introduce mealworms this weekend and chick crumb. The little fluff ball has a hungry tummy!

(oh and it squeeks very loudly when its dish is empty!!)

Mon 18th - Beaky is still doing well. We had hoped to get 'him' out for a swim on the brook this weekend - but the great british weather intervened. Heavy rain on Thursday, Friday and Sat have made the brook into a torrent which is tough enough for the big ducks. Beaky had to make do with a swim in the kitchen sink instead.

Oh he is so cute. I'll have to read your blog now to get updates on little Beaky. Sending a photo of him to my friend as she has two ducks.

Thanks Evy,
Beaky is a great little thing - unfortunately s/he is taking up an extraordinary amount of space in the kitchen as I have had to put the vivarium up on a table inside what was my kids playpen from when they were babies - reason is that Ginger our terrier is convinced that Beaky looks good enough to eat - literally. Im not sure what we will do when s/he outgrows the vivarium - I guess that is a bridge to be crossed as and when.

I will keep the news coming.
