Garden over Christmas

I haven’t been paying much attention to our newly-created garden approaching & over the festive season, apart from a good evening watering every day, as very hot here at the moment. But took some photos on the 22nd, as everything is definitely looking better than the bare patches of earth showing just a few weeks ago. Some of the new roses have finished their flowering season, but my latest rose the Hayley Westenra is flowering beautifully at this time, & the roses are gorgeous … they can just be seen at the top of the new fenceline garden bed … will take a closeup shot of them when I get the chance. Also took my camera with me when we took the dog for a walk around the neighbourhood on dec 27th …. there doesn’t seem to be a lot out at the moment, maybe due to the blazing heat we are having now & water restrictions already in place.
planted this as a bulb not long ago, & am thrilled to see this beautiful burgundy arum lily coming into bloom. Dec 22nd.
some blue agapanthus in bud, with a large single white. Dec 22nd.
The first time this climbing rose Veilchenblau has bloomed! And it has given us a lovely show for about four weeks now, but over its best at this time. The ricketty old trellis on the back fence, has now been taken down & will be replaced next week with a new trellis for it to be trained up. Dec 22nd.
The first Canna Lily of the season, flowering along the driveway near the garage. Hopefully we will see a few more in the weeks ahead. Dec 22nd.
This is the very first flower bed my OH dug out for me. The Federation Daisy & the Daphne Odorata are both doing very well. The 3 dwarf Hidcote Lavenders are beginning to form a border & the habergenia is climbing well. Dec 22nd.
I don’t know the name of this yellow-flowering shrub growing along our driveway, but it is smothered in blooms. Dec 22nd.
This lovely purple nz native Hebe was smothered beneath a heavy growth of honeysuckle, which I attacked vigorously a few weeks ago, & I have now been rewarded. Growing along the driveway. Dec 22nd.
One of a row of three relatively young hydrangeas growing beneath a window at the front of the house. Dec 22nd.
My single large white Agapanthus growing at the corner of the house at the back, sitting amongst lots of blue ones.
The other hydrangeas growing beneath a window at the front of my house. Dec 22nd.
Just a few weeks ago, this area contained nothing but grass & lots of long weeds growing up against this fence. My OH dug it all up for me & we planted it & finally I am seeing much less earth between each plant.
We have several large mature nz native phormium flaxes planted along our long driveway, & they now have lovely tall flower spikes on them. Dec 22nd.
Phormium flax flower spike with young kowhai tree next to it. Dec 22nd.
one of two long rows of blue agapanthus which are growing on either side of our house. This row is now mainly in bud & should bloom shortly. Dec 22nd.
We planted this Black Dragon Wisteria as just a tall ‘twig’ about 3 months ago, & now look at it! No flowers this season, but lots of foliage growth & it is beginning to climb up onto the sunporch roof.
Chinese Foxglove flowering for the first time. Has been weeded around since photo taken! Dec 22nd.
My semi-shade corner filling out, with rose, ivy, hosta, nz native Chatham Island Forget Me Not, & behind the Fire & Ice Hosta, there is a lovely little variegated fuchsia which has had one gorgeous lilac & magenta pink flower. Dec 22nd.
Spotted this in the front garden of a neighbour as we took the dog for a walk. I always forget what these are called, but think they are from South Africa & are used a lot by florists. Dec 27th.
Large deep rose-pink hydrangea at the front of another neighbour’s garden. Dec 27th.

Hi Dwyllis, it's knitting together nicely, the white agapanthus looks beautiful. I think the bush with yellow flowers is a hypericum or St Johns wort. The south African one is a Protea, I prefer the common name "Sugar bush"

Looks great Dwyllis - plenty of flowers there! Is the yellow bush a St Johns wort?

Love reading your blogs Dwyllis. Your garden is coming along really well. I bet youre really pleased with it - as you should be. It seems so strange that you are suffering a heat wave and in the middle of summer, when it is cold and dreary here. I look forward to seeing all your hard work fill out those borders even more. Hope you had a good Christmas.

And the flower in the photo before the protea is rehmannia. It does not like winter wet but a simple shelter (for example clingfilm over it held in place by a brick on either side) will get it through

Sorry Pimpernel, just noticed you'd already said St Johns Wort. This is what you get for not reading stuff properly!! :-))

I have to look at photos to see our garden looking like your lovely newly created garden. The shrub with yellow flowers is in my garden too......Hidcote something. Funny to see it 'down under'. I think of exotic narrow leafed shrubs. Your Aggs grow wonderfully there too. I think they hail from S Africa. Your rose is an unusual pretty colour too. Happy New Year to you and yours****
