Flora Fauna in Stained Glass by NZ Artists

My OH took me to a reclamation shop yesterday, as an outing in the city of Wanganui. To my delight, I found a door to put into the end of our long hallway, where it enters the dining/kitchen area. We have been searching for the correct door for a couple of years now, but all the ones I liked, were either too big or too narrow. This one was almost spot on, & with a little bit of careful tweaking by my OH, it will be perfect. It has a panelled bottom part, which matches all our other original 1910 doors, & the rest is made up of two pieces of arched amber patterned glass. As we need natural light into the hall, we are going to remove the amber glass, as nice as it is, & replace it with stained glass. So I have spent a happy hour on the sofa looking at NZ websites selling stained glass, & below is a selection of lovely glass door panels & windows, mainly depicting NZ Flora & Fauna. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I have.

The very curious & friendly NZ Native Fantail.

Lovely NZ Icon The Tui

Pretty NZ Native Pukeko

NZ Kaka Parrot

Lovely Arum Lilies

NZ Pohutukawa Blossoms

NZ Maori symbol The Koru …symbolises family love & friendship. Comes from the Koru Fern.

Lovely NZ Native tree flower the Kowhai …much loved by the Tui bird, who sip the sweet nectar in spring.

NZ Native Kingfisher

NZ Native Morepork …our only existing owl ….it was given its name because of its call ….more pork. More pork

Oh Wow... those are lovely !!!
I'm adding this blog to GoYpedia Mosaics ... :o)

Fantastic work over there! I liked them all. I was attracted most of all by the doors on the tenth picture. They are to my surprise absolutely identical with doors to my grandmother´s restaurant. It was built between WWI and WWII, it was large and sunny space. That restaurant had also theatre and ball room and large windows, which were facing to the river and fields. They were half made from painted glass like this and the same were doors - excatly like those on the picture :))
Unfortunately, when communists took it from us, they destroyed sheets of glass and nailed there wooden boards. I was often thinking of general restoration in this way, but it would cost me mayland.
I like this sort of works. We have also very talented masters.

Thank you to everyone for their great comments. Sanbaz ....we will probably go for the roses, I think ....though arum lilies are lovely too & one can commission a work to be done. Katarina .....I hope one day you will let us see some work by your fellow countrymen .....beautiful glasswork is a hallmark of many countries in Europe. Such a shame when beautiful craftsmanship is destroyed by hatred & ignorance. Our world has sadly known so many dark times.

Thanks Terratoonie for adding to GoYpedia. Marguerite ....the door will hopefully be delivered early this week & I am hoping my OH will work on it this coming weekend. Glass won't be removed & replaced for another few weeks, but will put up a pic of the door when it arrives & then another when the new glass goes in ....before & after shots lol.

So many to choose from, I like the Maori symbol and the tree flower the best but they are all lovely, well done on tracking down your door I look forward to seeing the glass in place, hubby is going to be busy.....

He is going to be very busy, Lincslass, as our new garden shed will hopefully be delivered by the end of the week also. That will come in kit form & he will then need to sort it all out & get it built & attach it to the concrete pad we have waiting for it. Also has to take off the sliding door into our laundry & rehang it on hinges, as it keeps coming off its track, & last but certainly not least, there is a row of wall cupboards to be put up in the kitchen. I am breaking out in a sweat just thinking about it! My poor OH ....as he works full time, he only has weekends to do things around the house or garden. With a herniated disc pessing on my sciatic nerve, I am not allowed or able to do any lifting, so am not going to be any help at all. However, I am painting the kitchen walls slowly ....I do a little bit on them every day, as only the first coat so doesn't need to be done all at once.

The glass is incredible and I would have a hard time choosing, the only ones I don't think I'd choose are of the blue bird......lovely bird but showing his bottom to the camera ever time......the moorhens do that here when alarmed :0)

LOL Pam. I had not noticed that. Our lovely Pukeko is obviously very proud of that white bottom!

Tell me about it, we seem to have spent the last six months going from one job straight on to another, we have a sliding door on the shed that is built on the side of the house, its very heavy and comes off the track on a regular basis, luckily it cannot fall outwards on us, I have been on at my hubby to fix that for over twenty years, he`ll do it when he gets around to it, worse thing I ever did was allowing him to put the darn thing up in the first place, I keep threatening to put his favourite fishing rod behind it, I might get it fixed then, lol..... I hate hanging wall cupboards, it hurts standing holding them whilst the men do the marking........

These are all spectacular... I would have such difficulty in choosing one that I liked more than the others!!! Have you been able to make any decisions regarding your door?

Petal ....I like the roses shown above & I also like a similar one with Arum Lilies instead of roses. I think I may well go with the lilies as less common than the roses. The door was supposed to be delivered today, but not coming until tomorrow now, & my OH is going to put it in place over the weekend. It will keep its amber glass in it for a few weeks before I put the order in for the replacement stained glass.

Glad you enjoyed the blog Floribunda. I am also very fond of stained glass & have had it in most houses I have lived in. I would love to learn how to do it, & may take glasses in a few years when we retire.

Dwyllis - we are all looking forward to seeing the results!

The door is now in our house, but not installed yet, as my OH spent the whole afternoon yesterday removing, resizing & rehanging the sliding door into our laundry. It is now on hinges, which is so much better. Today it is raining, so OH not able to take the door for hall outside to work on it. Will have to wait until next weekend, & garden shed is being delivered tomorrow, so he will want to get that up also. It will be a busy weekend for him, but the door will be top priority .....I hope.
