Whale of a Tale

Fralic Cove in September

September is my favourite month, although it means we’re heading out of summer into fall. But the days are warm and sunny, the nights cool for sleeping and the ocean is warm. Today we wanted to have a picnic by the shore, and headed down the coast a few kms to Fralic Cove near Liverpool, NS (between Brooklyn and Beach Meadows), an unprepossessing little inlet with a rotting slipway and falling-down fish sheds. Pretty none-the-less, I’m sure you’ll agree.

An old fishing shack in the cove:

From there we walked a short trail along the cliffs to the south:

Trees had come down since our last visit, probably in the recent storms:

But our path wound off to the right anyway:

We wound past smaller coves:

Soon the path opened up onto the high rocks above the shore:

We were about to perch ourselves and start our picnic when Patrick spotted a pod (or several) of whales near the opposite shore:

They were so fast underwater you never knew where they would pop up again, so photos were not very successful, but I tried:

I can’t tell you what a thrill it was to see these huge creatures swimming about happily in the open ocean. And we hadn’t even needed to take a whale-spotting cruise!
The bay was full of frolicking seals too, so the whales must have chased a shoal of pollock or mackerel into the bay:

What sights to accompany our simple cheese and fruit meal.

After about an hour everything was peaceful once more and we decided it was time to head home for a cup of tea. Cafés and such are non-existent along this coast… We found some berries along the path – a sure sign that summer is almost over.

We stopped at the beach at Eagle Head on the way home for a quick walk on the beach as the tide was out a long way.

So, these were a few more views of south-west Nova Scotia for you. Hope you enjoyed the picnic!

I'm happy you all enjoyed reading about our exciting sighting (do you like that rhyming??). It was hard to believe really - some of the whale sighting cruises never even get to see one whale. And we saw several. We think they were pilot whales - not huge monsters, but big enough to scare off the pleasure boat that ventured too close before it sighted the whales. Here's a video of pilot whales in the Sea of Cortez, between the Baja peninsula and Mexico: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5145772904739544966#

Hi Elke, I've never thought about moving to a different country before, but I am so tempted now !!! I live 16 miles up the coast from Liverpool but it doesn't look anything like where you are Lol !!!

No, I'm sure it doesn't... But then I'm from Cornwall originally, and Nova Scotia doesn't look anything like that either!! I long for the Lakes and some good hiking in Cumbria, too. Make the best of what you have, that's my motto.

The pictures of the whales and seals and the whole area look really great. You are truly blessed.
