Dried flowers, and other

I had a couple of poppies turn up in my front garden, and managed to dry the stems. Then I bought every colour spray paint that I could find.

Testing the colours:

I decided to go for red, gold, black and silver – and bronze, once I’d found that.

Some of the poppy heads brok off their stems, but they were interesting enough to use in their own right

I did much more than I could possibly find room for, but at the time, doing it was more important than what do with them once I’d done it.

and added some ornamental grass stems:

Then I bought a box of pine cones:

I’d had a box of shells for ages that I hadn’tknown what to do with:

[the tray is a suprmarket corned-beef pack]

Now all I need to do is to find enough shelf space to display them.

ps: i managed to save a lot of the seeds, so if anyone wants any purple poppy seeds …

Pretty! Have you ever made little fairies from a poppy head (with its petals). I remember being given one when I was small and I always wondered how it was done.

What super ways to use odds and ends often lying about. Thanks for the information ☺

Thanks, all! The painting was a tiny prob: I had to do it outdoors, and try to find a corner that wasn't too windy. Also, I was a bit too close, or held hte can a bit too close, and overdid some bits, while others had to be done again.

The red and gold go well together, and so do the black and silver; glad I went for only a few colours. I wasn't particualrly taken with the others. Maybe I didn't shake the tins enough.

Took me a fortnight before I could do any painting at all! they all had "child-proof" lids, and the "pinch here" patches were much too strong for me; I had to wait till I had a visitor to help me get the lids off.

@ Eirlys - I've never heard of poppy fairies! could you explain how it's done, or do you have any photos? sounds very interesting!

Well done Fran..imagination at it's best..I must get my shells out of a box in the shed, and have a go..I love your pine cones too, very effective :o)

The shells were placed in the empty plastic tray of a box of chocolates, one per inset; i had to spray one side, let them dry, then turn them over and do the other side. Even so, some of the smaller shells got blasted out of the tray by the force of the spray.

lol and the pine cones were done in a plastic tray from a box of biscuits; same top-and tail. I did think of doing the outside [bottom] one colour and the inside [top] another. maybe another day ...

lol if you look closely, you can see where I didn't do it right. But it was my firt time of trying: I was making it up as I went along

Fran: Wish I could. I do recall being told the petals had to be folded down and tied. No other recollection so not much use. I'll have a look on line and see if anyone else remembers anything.

if it comes to using actual poppy petals, I'd be no good, I'm not exactly good at delicate stuff with delicate materials.

I tried Googling but only got offered 'orribly twee ornaments, fancy dress, books, paintings, cakes - no matter how i phrased it.

Maybe someone on GoY might know - lol i could put a question on my local info forum!
