Whats the big heart-shaped leaved plant?
2 Sep, 2009
Thanks Milky, Bernieh.
Marie - It's an Aroid...Colocasia Esculenta or sometimes called Elephants Ears. It's usually grown as an ornamental water plant, they grow well in the pond and stream. They're edible, the leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals and the corms they grow from are like yam. These are toxic when raw (like tatties), they must be cooked to get rid of toxins. It's a staple food in Caribbean cultures. I like to cook them in coconut milk!

Sound good, but I dont have a pond (well I do today, but not normally!)

We eat a lot of plants that we grow, flowers too! They'll grow in pots as long as you keep them well watered and fed...I've got some in buckets too.

I'll look out for them then! Look great & taste good too?? At least they'd live in this weather! Unlike my tatties!

Yep, as long as they have their feet wet they're fine...good ones for a boggy patch that keeps flooding.

You mean my garden??

Not only yours, mine too, we get flooded regularly! 8-(

I'm about 1,000yards (if that) from the river!

Does it burst it's banks then?

It flooded really badly right here 10 years ago,(I wasnt here, but apparently my house was 6 feet deep in it!) & they put flood barriers up IN TOWN!! So I dont know that it'd help here!

Thank you Louise, the foliage colours, sizes and shapes of leaves are all so different but somehow they sit well together! 8-)))
