I love them too Cinderella. I noticed a bit of blackfly on the tips of the plants today so I will be out later with the empty kitchen spray bottle filled up with washingup liquid and water ;-)

Runner beans are a super veg to grow.We started one lot off in the greenhouse then transplanted outside and a couple of weeks later planted some in the ground so we have some coming on a bit later. CLimbing french beans are worth growing if not a lot of space. We only have a small veg patch and use the totem pole method. Yours look really productive.

Thank you Lindak I have planted mine in succession this year so don't really have too many of them each time. I am starting off some more today, not sure if it is getting a bit late though now.

Thats great Richard as a lot of people this year have had trouble getting any beans after the flowers, they are getting the flowers but no beans, they said they don't like the hot weather and always splash the flowers with water for future reference.

thanks for that Sixpence I have not had so many beans this year;-)

You now know why, I was chatting to another goyer here and was wondering is it a lack of bees pollenating or have they got iffy seed.

Not sure sixpence but mine are not doing as well as last year. We have enough for dinner today though I will be going out in the garden soon to get some ;-)

It's good to spray the plants all over to help set the flowers and the sparrows sometimes eat the flowers away to get at the nectar. The wind that we have had has knocked a lot of them off this year too.

Yes that sounds about it Lindak - are you growing any runner this year?
1 Aug, 2010
Yes I have three small totem poles of cane with one lot of climbing french beans and two lots of runner beans one sown a few weeks after the other on the other two. Living on a hill at the top we do get the wind in the garden and it blew some of the flowers off the runners. We've had blackfly on the beans but the wasps have done a good job of taking them away to their nest.

I noticed some blackfly on our runner beans today but there does not seem too be too many of them. I am going out later to give them a blast with the sprayer on 'jet' and filled with warm soapy water.
I am growing french beans Lindak but the normal type-I didn't know you could get climbing ones.

They seem to take up less space as they grow skyward and produce well too.Fasold is the name of the bean we have grown this year.

Thanks Lindak I will try grwing some of those next time as we haven't really go a lot of room ;-)

They have a pretty lilac flower. The beans aren't stringy and taste very nice.
