One of my "heroes", who managed to introduce over 240 plant species to the UK, many now well-known garden plants to us.

Hi David...
David Douglas lived only about 35 years ?
Wow, he achieved a lot in a short life.....

Thanks for the info as I had always assumed Douglas firs were from a place not a person.

Hi, Tt. Yes, he died, aged 35, following a fatal fall into a wild bull pit trap on Hawaii. His short life makes his achievements even more remarkable. :-))
Hi,.Drc. Douglas fir originally native to western N. America, where Douglas travelled and collected extensively. Its Latin name, however, Pseudotsuga menziesii, refers to another botanist/collector, Archibald Menzies, a contemporary of Douglas, and fellow Perthshireman, who is possibly most well-known for introducing here the Monkey Puzzle ttee and Chilean Flameflower, Tropolaeum speciosum. :-))
(aren't I full of useless info? Lol!)

David, you can be proud of your great botanists, and David Douglas is one of them...but the life was too short...

Yes Uma I agree.
Life was too short, but we will not forget them... For they gave us the knowledge. So we can use their knowledge, in the best way we can, until we ourselves, can use it no more... But like them we will be passed on.
