The first time I can ever recall seeing these coloured cabbages during the winter was when I lived in Spain & spent a few months in Madrid teaching English. I stayed at my sister-in-law's flat. I had to catch a bus sometimes & the park behind the bus-stop had 100s of these planted along the border of the park, they did very well but I was there only during the earlier part of the winter but I imagine they must have lasted all winter or the park's gardeners would never have planted them.

BTW, the winters in Madrid are very much colder than in most of the UK, except perhaps in Scotland. Madrid is about 900ft above sea level & there is a range of mountains quite close to the city & a lot of very cold weather comes down from them. I lived two years & a bit in Madrid. I spent 3 winters there. While I lived in Spain I also had to go to the capital on quite a few occasions & it's not by any means like the coastal cities of the Med!

Well Balcony judging by your vast experience, it does sound very promising for our ornamental kales, its really good to have information from someone who has experienced such cold winters, so hopefully our kales will come through the English winter, hope so as they are so attractive ;0)
